Nucşoara: Lakes, Crafts and Routes to Vârful Moldoveanu
Accommodation in Nucşoara
Nucşoara brings together a clear connection to the locality with cultural and natural themes that relate in some cases to the village itself and in others to the commune’s territory. Lacul Nucșoara, also known as Lacul Învârtita, lies in the centre of the village, between the Râurile Doamnei and Vâlsan rivers. This distinction is useful when planning your trip: the lake is associated with the village centre, while several landscape features are found across the commune. You can therefore consider nature, cultural traditions and routes to Vârful Moldoveanu as separate points of interest.
The lake and the commune’s landscape
Lacul Învârtita is considered the largest lake in Romania formed in gypsum deposits. Lacul Nucșoara and Lacul Învârtita are two names for the same body of water. The commune’s territory is home to 14 glacial lakes within the Golul alpin Valea Rea-Zarna nature reserve. The commune’s relief includes planation, glacial and periglacial landforms. The lakes, nature reserve and relief describe different aspects of the landscape across the commune. This distinction helps separate information about the lake in the village centre from the broader landscape features of the commune.
Colții Cremenei is among the named rock formations in the commune’s territory. Cascada Zbuciumatul is one of the marble ledges and waterfalls there. The commune also has mineral springs described as sulphate-rich, calcium-rich, sodium-rich or sulphurous, which could be used for balneological purposes. These potential uses are part of the picture of the area’s natural resources; they do not describe an operating bathing facility.
Crafts, wooden houses and remembrance
Locals in the Nucşoara area still practise crafts such as loom weaving, sewing, embroidery, carving, woodworking and decorating Easter eggs. Traditional wooden houses also display craftsmanship: they are adorned with carved ornaments and roofed with handmade wooden shingles. Casa Memorială Elisabeta Rizea is associated with Elisabeta Rizea, a well-known heroine of the anti-communist resistance. Thus, active craft traditions, architectural design and historical remembrance stand alongside one another as distinct cultural themes.
Routes to Vârful Moldoveanu
The Nucșoara hiking route leads to Vârful Moldoveanu in the Făgăraș Mountains. The route through Valea Rea to the summit is listed as taking 6–7 hours. The actual duration depends on conditions and your fitness, so treat this time as a guide. A forest road leads from Slatina in Nucșoara commune to Stâna lui Burnei, the starting point for the route to Vârful Moldoveanu. Cascada Văii Rele, a named waterfall along the route, lies between Stâna lui Burnei and the summit. Check road and access conditions before travelling; trail conditions can also change. The summit route therefore offers a specific timeframe of several hours, while crafts and wooden houses are cultural highlights of the area.
