Accommodation in Viksøyri
Viksøyri combines its location on the Sognefjord with an old coastal settlement, a historic stone church and a daily express boat service to and from Bergen. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, you can choose your destination based on your interests: a fjord setting, local history or transport links.
Viksøyri on the Sognefjord and how to get there
Viksøyri lies at the mouth of the Viksvassdraget river system on the southern shore of the Sognefjord. National Road 13 runs through Vikøyri between Voss and Vangsnes. The express boat service to and from Bergen runs daily throughout the year. This gives you different points of reference when planning your trip: a road that passes through the settlement and a year-round daily boat service. Check the current timetable before departure, as schedules may change.
Coastal settlement, cultural trail and Hove Stone Church
Vikøyri is an old coastal settlement. A signposted cultural trail leads through the old settlement and makes its history a focus of a visit to the area. Nearby is Gamleøyri, the oldest part of the centre of Vik. Gamleøyri lies close to the well-known fjord promenade.
Hove Stone Church stands at the southern edge of the settlement. Dating from around 1170, it is one of Norway’s oldest stone churches. Its history also includes a period when it was threatened with demolition: in 1880, the architect Peter Andreas Blix bought the church with his own money and began a comprehensive restoration. The building’s great age and Blix’s later initiative are two distinct chapters in its history.
Museum and Gamalost in Vikøyri
The Kristianhus Motor Museum is located in Vikøyri, at the mouth of the Vikja River. Vik’s tourist information office is located in the Kristianhus båt- og motormuseum. The museum and information office are both specific landmarks in the area.
At Ostebaren, visitors can learn about Gamalost and how it is made. They can also enjoy raspberry juice and a slice of Gamalost. Learning about the cheese and sampling it are part of the same experience. If you’re planning this culinary visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
