Fresvik lies on the southern side of the Sognefjord, near the entrance to the Aurlandsfjord and at the entrance to the Nærøyfjord World Heritage area. The fjord and mountains form the geographical landmarks of the village. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Fresvik, you can plan your trip around the area’s different highlights: hikes, the cultural trail and traces of local history, or activities on the fjord.

Mountain Scenery and Hiking

Fresvikbreen reaches 1,648 metres and is the highest point in Fresvik. A large part of the mountain area lies within a protected landscape area. The mountains around Fresvik offer opportunities for longer hikes. Fresvikåsen is home to a pine forest that is among the largest in Sogn og Fjordane. Fresvikåsen also has considerable natural and cultural value and has been used by residents and people working the land in the area for generations. The forest, mountain landscape and their long history of local use give the area many different facets.

The Cultural Trail Through Fresvik

One specific walking route is the Fresvik cultural trail – Vetlerunden i bygdi: the trail is five kilometres long and is walked on foot. It starts at the quay and the shop in Fresvik, passes Fresvik Church and follows the Folkesti along the river back to the sports ground and the quay. The Løypestrengen at Skausvollen is also part of the cultural trail. The route combines walking with insights into local history. As local access conditions may change, check them before setting out.

Church, Memorials and Earlier Traces

Fresvik Church stands on a medieval church site. The present building is a wooden long church with 200 seats. Provost Jacob Edvard Smith consecrated it on 29 June 1881. Beside the church stands a tall memorial stone, erected on 17 May 1913 in memory of ten people from Fresvik who took part in the war against Sweden from 1807 to 1814. Since 1987, another memorial stone at the Modig IL sports ground has commemorated Mensen Ernst, the long-distance runner from Fresvik.

Notanaustet was built around 1910 and is the only surviving net shed in Sogn. Just before the road to the settlement, visible remains of the old Høgheim road can be seen; it was also known as “Kjærleiksstien.” Archaeological excavations at the Grundeland farm uncovered settlement traces from the Iron Age and Bronze Age in 2001. The mountains around Fresvikbreen are also home to some of Norway’s oldest, largest and best-preserved trapping facilities for wild reindeer. They are 500 to 2,000 years old.

Activities on the Fjord

Kayaking is possible on the fjord at Fresvik, as are boat trips and fishing. Swimming is also possible in the fjord. These water activities complement a specific walking route and opportunities for longer hikes. When planning your stay, you can consider whether hiking, Fresvik’s cultural history or time by the fjord should be your main focus.
