Idse: Island Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Idse
Idse between Høgsfjord and Idsal
Idse is a long, partly forested island in the municipality of Strand in Rogaland. It lies at the mouth of Høgsfjord, southwest of Jørpeland, and covers 4.9 square kilometers. North of Idse and Idsal, Idsefjord runs toward Jørpeland. The narrow Idsesund separates Idse from the 3.1-square-kilometer island of Idsal. County Road 4640 crosses the sound on a bridge, connects the two islands, and continues east to County Road 523 on the mainland.
Heights and Natural Areas
At 142 meters, Storvarden is Idse’s highest point. On the northern heights, an area of 332 decares includes valuable coastal pine forest. Litlevare nord is a 71.4-decare area of poor boreonemoral rain forest, classified as having natural value level B. These figures describe different aspects of the landscape: Storvarden marks the highest point, while the decare figures indicate the size of the named natural areas.
Farm and History
The Idse cultural environment includes Idse Farm and an associated boathouse setting in the northeast. The remains of 13 boathouse foundations can be found there; seven boathouses, or buildings for storing boats, are preserved. Two older houses also remain at Idse Farm. One was built around 1760 as a central-passage house and used as a tingstue, or meeting room for the local assembly. The architectural style and former use offer two different clues about the same house: “central-passage house” describes the building type, while “tingstue” refers to its former function.
Archaeological traces and historic sites are also part of Idse’s history. Seven flint daggers were found on the island in 1922. An iron-smelting pit on Idse was about 1 meter long and 50 to 60 centimeters deep. For a long time, the popular assembly gathered at Tinghaug. The daggers and pit are material finds; Tinghaug is associated with a historic assembly function. One historical interpretation also considers Idse to have been a noble estate. The island is regarded as a local power center during the period when the first longhouses were built.
Recreation and Local Character
Kjeksevåg on Idse is designated as a bathing spot and local recreation area. Idse is also associated with an orienteering map area. Potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, blueberries, and Christmas trees are part of the island’s agricultural landscape. These topics complement Idse’s landscape and cultural heritage with references to swimming, recreation, and agriculture.
Strand as a Regional Context
In the broader destination of Strand, Preikestolen is located within the municipality of Strand and is a hiking destination in its own right. The following information about the cliff and hike refers to Strand as a regional context, not to Idse. The cliff is 604 meters high. The trail there passes through marshland and forests and includes stone steps built by Nepalese Sherpas. The hike is 8 kilometers in total and takes about four hours round trip. Trail conditions can vary; check them before setting out. On Idse, Storvarden and the named forest areas shape the island’s own description, while Preikestolen adds a separate hiking destination to the regional context of Strand.
