Tananger is a destination for travellers looking to include a harbour town with maritime history and seaside trails in their hotel choice. The harbour is a small port for boats and visiting vessels, with pleasant outdoor areas by the sea. Its inner harbour is one of the few natural harbours on Jæren. From the harbour, you can quickly reach the centre on foot, where there are two shopping centres and several restaurants. Tananger is easily accessible by car, with plenty of parking nearby. There are bus stops at several points along the Tanangerturen trail. For detailed connections, the route information refers to Kolumbus; check there for the bus service that suits your plans.

The Harbour and Tanangerturen

The Tanangerturen trail starts at the inner harbour and follows a path to the seaside bathing area at Myklebust. Red T-markers indicate the route. Most of the way is on asphalt or paved paths, and the entire route is lit. Its starting point and destination connect the harbour with the bathing area, while the surface, markers and lighting provide further details about the route. If the condition of the path is important for your outing, check current conditions before setting out.

Maritime Collection and Historic Buildings

At Tananger Harbour, the Kystkultursamlingen (Coastal Culture Collection) is displayed in the Melingsjøhuset. The house was built in 1851 by Lensmann Enok Torgersen. The collection includes numerous maritime objects and probably one of Norway’s most extensive collections of working boats. The house and collection thus connect a specific place with Tananger’s maritime history.

The Monsen house offers an older point of reference: its oldest part dates from around 1730. It is the only building in Sola protected by a decision under the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Act. There is also an important limit on visits: the house is privately owned and cannot be visited inside.

Another architectural feature is the Snødetoppen tunnel complex in the Snøde area of Tananger. It comprises several rooms, including two vaulted halls lined with brick. The tunnel complex adds another historical and architectural dimension to the houses and maritime collection.

Coastal and Trail Experiences in the Wider Sola Destination

The wider Sola destination offers other coastal and trail experiences, distinct from the routes in Tananger. Solastranden is a long sandy beach next to Stavanger Airport. Ølbergstranden has a kiosk, a restaurant, a playground and a beach volleyball court. If needed, check in advance whether these facilities are currently available.

The Kyststien trail runs for about five kilometres from Solastranden to Vigdel, passes through Ølberg Harbour and is marked in blue. Unlike the Tanangerturen, it does not start at Tananger’s inner harbour, but connects Solastranden and Vigdel via Ølberg. Its approximate length, trail markings and stated endpoints help distinguish the two routes as different options in the wider Sola destination.

Also in the wider Sola destination is the Solabu day-trip cabin, which is open to everyone all year round. An approximately one-kilometre gravel path leads from the car park to the cabin; it is accessible by pushchair or wheelchair. For those planning a trip that takes in a walk as well as the coast and cultural heritage, this provides specific information on the route length, surface and accessibility.

More Historic Sites in Sola

The wider Sola destination’s cultural history has other points of interest too. The medieval Sola Ruinkyrkje church was built in the 12th century. Two large stone crosses stand in the old cemetery at Tjora and are among the earliest material traces of the Christianisation of Norway. These regional historic sites complement Tananger’s buildings and maritime collection.
