Kopervik: Town History, Art and Leisure
Accommodation in Kopervik
Kopervik combines a harbour area for maritime traffic with a traffic-calmed shopping street. You can choose different focuses for your stay: local history and public art, cultural events, or leisure by the water and outdoors. If you’re looking for a hotel in Kopervik, it helps to sort out your interests before choosing.
History and Architectural Heritage
Following the growth of the herring fishery in the late 19th century, Kopervik developed into an important trading centre. The town’s cultural environment is of cultural and architectural-historical value and bears witness to its development over 200 years. This environment includes the protected bascule bridge in Straumsund and Gamleskolen, a school building dating from 1779. Treborg is Kopervik’s oldest and best-preserved wooden house district. Together, these places point to different aspects of the town’s architectural and local history: a historic district, a dated school building and a protected bridge.
Public Art
Several works of art are associated with specific locations in Kopervik. Svein Magnus Håvarstein’s relief “Arquebus” is located at the town hall. Arne Vigeland’s bronze sculpture “Leaping Deer” is located between Kopervik dagsenter and Kopervik kirke. A bust of Magnus Haaland stands in Magnus Haaland Square, in front of the house where he grew up. Another bust on Hovedgaten, in Magnus Gjertsen Square, commemorates the Kopervik local artist Magnus Gjertsen. The sculpture “The Sea and the Wind” was commissioned as an artwork for the new town hall in Kopervik and installed in 1986. Here, you’ll encounter different forms of public art: a relief, a bronze sculpture, busts and a sculpture with its own year of creation.
Cultural Venues and Events
Cultural events are held at Kopervik kulturhus in the Blackbox and at Anna Eegs; courses offered by the cultural school are also held there. The Karmøygeddon Metal Festival takes place in the centre of Kopervik. If you’d like to plan your stay around an event, check the dates: future event arrangements may change. This makes it possible to distinguish between the cultural programme at the venue and a festival date in the town centre when planning, without assuming a specific recurrence or a fixed event calendar.
Leisure by the Water and Outdoors
Sandkassen is a beach by Kopervik’s harbour basin, with a sauna and chess tables. Varden is a hill offering views over Kopervik. Paddling on Fotvatnet in Kopervik is recommended as an activity. These three places cater to different interests: a beach area with a sauna and somewhere to play, a viewpoint over the town, and an opportunity to include paddling in your travel plans.
Liarlund has a forest disc golf course as well as illuminated ski trails or paths. Maintenance conditions and lighting hours may change; check the conditions before visiting if your plans depend on them. There is a pump track park in Stangeland. The “Eventyrjakten” activity trail takes you to central locations in Kopervik, from the Strømsund Bridge to the pilot station at Treborg. This lets you consider your interests in exercise, views, paddling or local history as different focuses for your stay.
