Nord-Hidle is one of the seven islands of Sjernarøyane. Traditional farmsteads, archaeological traces, and maritime orientation shape the themes that define a stay here.

Accommodation on Nord-Hidle

Norda Hidle is the northern farm on Nord-Hidle and offers accommodation in a natural setting. Availability varies by season and capacity, so check before making firm travel plans. Norda Hidle’s Eldhus restaurant serves pizza from a wood-fired oven dating from 1917. The oven is therefore a precisely dated feature of the farm’s culinary offering.

Cultural Landscape and History

Nord-Hidle is one of the islands in the proposed Sjernarøyane KULA cultural landscape. Traditional buildings are preserved on the island in well-adapted farmsteads within this landscape. The farmsteads and landscape together form part of Nord-Hidle’s built heritage and give the island’s history a tangible connection to the place.

A so-called “sacred stone” stands in Norda Hidle’s garden: a phallic symbol associated with a cult of strength and fertility. About ten clearance cairns have been recorded at the highest point of Nord-Hidle, indicating agricultural use as early as the Iron Age. These details offer different cultural-historical perspectives: a culturally interpreted object on the farm and stone traces of early agricultural use.

The surrounding area also helps place the island in its historical context. HolmavĂĄgen on Hidleholmen is on an island west of Nord-Hidle, separated from the main island by the Hidlesundet strait. People lived there from the late 17th to the late 19th century. Several boathouses and sea sheds worthy of protection have also been recorded on the eastern side of the Hidlesundet. Thus, evidence of Iron Age agriculture sits alongside later traces of settlement and maritime-influenced buildings.

Island Access and Moorings

Nord-Hidle is the only one of the seven islands of Sjernarøyane that is not connected by a bridge to the other six. At the same time, Nord-Hidle is among the currently active ferry and express-boat landing quays in Sjernarøyane. Individual departures may change, so check the timetable for your specific trip.

Guests of Norda Hidle who have announced their visit in advance can moor at the quay below the farm in the north of the island. At the southeastern tip of the main island of Nord-Hidle, there is a guest harbor below a holiday-home area. These location details distinguish the quay at the farm from the guest harbor at the southeastern tip; advance notice is required to moor at Norda Hidle’s quay.
