Discover Fogn: hiking trails and maritime history
Accommodation in Fogn
Fogn brings together marked hiking trails, a day cabin open year-round and a maritime history. This gives you a choice of different ways to plan your visit: hiking, time at the beaches and insights into the cultural history of Basthabn and Rossøysundet.
Hiking on Fogn
The Ørnareiret day cabin stands on Ørnakula, Fogn’s highest peak. The peak is 166 metres above sea level. Ørnareiret is open to everyone year-round, providing a specific destination at the island’s highest point. Fogn’s hiking trails are marked with blue posts; signs point the way at trail junctions.
From Erås, you can take a circular hike through Robin Hood Forest; Erås is the shortest starting option. Robin Hood Forest is a destination for children. Looking for hollow oaks is another activity you can enjoy on Fogn. The island is also suitable for cycling. This means you can plan your outing around whether you would rather hike, cycle or visit a specific place such as Ørnareiret.
Beaches and time outdoors
Fogn has beaches with barbecue facilities. This offers two specific ways to enjoy time by the water: swimming and barbecuing. Together with the marked hiking trails and cycling routes, this gives you a choice between exploring the island and spending time at the beaches. You can take into account which of these activities you would like to focus on when planning your days.
Maritime cultural history at Basthabn
On Fogn’s southwest side, in the Ryfylke Fjord, Basthabn and Rossøysundet form a maritime cultural landscape. Basthabn is designated as a particularly valuable maritime cultural landscape in the regional plan for cultural landscapes. Historically, Basthabn-Rossøysundet was a central stopping point and inn on the route between Ryfylke and Stavanger.
More than 70 cultural heritage sites were documented during archaeological investigations at Basthabn on Fogn. A medieval shipwreck also lies in Basthabn Bay. These places and finds provide specific points of reference for Fogn’s maritime history, from the route’s former role to the traces in the bay. If you are interested in cultural history, Basthabn adds a distinct focus to the hiking and beach destinations.
Getting there and parking
Fogn can be reached from Judaberg on Finnøy by car ferry or express boat. You can also reach the island by express boat from Stavanger city centre. Check the timetables for your chosen service before travelling so you can plan your journey to suit your plans.
There are four parking options on Fogn: at the quay, by the church, at Joker Fogn and at Erås. If you are travelling by car, these locations may be useful when planning your visit. You can consider the information about getting there and parking alongside the focus of your planned outing—for example, a hike starting from Erås, a visit to the water or time at the maritime cultural sites.
