Halden: Fortress History on the Iddefjord
Accommodation in Halden
Halden offers several ways to plan your trip: the border history of Fredriksten Fortress, museums and historic buildings, as well as paths along the Iddefjord and the Tista River. You can tailor your stay around culture, walks or longer routes.
Fredriksten Fortress and its history
Fredriksten Fortress was a central part of Norwayâs border defences for more than 300 years. Over the course of its history, it was attacked six times but never captured in battle. The grounds are open around the clock; museums and events have their own opening hours. There are walking paths and viewpoints on the grounds.
The Fredriksten Museum is located in Ăstre Kurtine. It presents Haldenâs war history and life at the fortress from the 17th century until the dissolution of the union in 1905. In the wider Halden destination, visitors can also explore the fortressâs ramparts, bastions, magazines and deep passageways. A hiking trail with 13 stops also leads through the historic surroundings.
Museums and architectural heritage
The Halden Prison Museum features a fully restored prison built in 1863, with twelve cells. It is located in the only surviving district prison from the former network of Norwegian district prisons. The museum is open to groups who wish to take part in learning about its history; please arrange group visits in advance.
The Halden Museum â FayegĂ„rden presents the cityâs history in a historic building dating from 1830. It includes exhibitions, events and family-friendly experiences. The exhibition âHalden can: factories & peopleâ features entrepreneurs and workers who contributed to Haldenâs industrial development in the 19th and 20th centuries. Individual exhibitions and events may change. If you would like to see this particular exhibition, check before your visit to confirm that it is still on display.
In central Halden stands the whitewashed Immanuel Church, a masonry cruciform church designed mainly in the Empire style and built in 1833. Wheelchair users can access it via a side entrance, which may be a little narrow because of the doors. As accessibility may change during construction work, it is advisable to check for up-to-date information if this entrance is important for your visit.
RĂžd HerregĂ„rd in Halden is one of Norwayâs best-preserved manor houses. Fredrikshalds Teater is a lively venue for performing arts and interpretation. In the wider Halden destination, it is also known as Norwayâs oldest surviving Baroque theatre.
Paths along the river and fjord
Central Halden has riverside promenades and a guest harbour. A cycling loop in the city centre is 2.8 kilometres long, rated easy, and starts and ends at Halden Gjestehavn. Its season runs from March to September; route details may change seasonally. A walking path follows the Tista River and the signs to RÞd HerregÄrd.
The wider Halden destination also offers longer hiking options. The historic circular walking trail through Halden is 3.9 kilometres long, takes about an hour and passes several memorials. The pilgrimage route through Halden is about 50 kilometres long; its Borgleden section runs from the border waterfall along the Iddefjord or National Road 220 through the city centre. Borgleden is well marked and can be walked from early spring to late autumn.
The Kyststien also runs through the wider Halden destination. The trail is about 70 kilometres long, starts at the southern border and ends in RĂžsneskilen. It follows the Enningdalsvassdraget and the Iddefjord, passes through the town of Halden and continues to its meeting point with the Singlefjord at Sponvika. The approximate distance and different route options can help you distinguish a shorter walk from a longer hike. Check trail conditions before setting out.
