For a trip to Gressvik, you can choose to focus on hiking, scenery or cycling. Nearby Gressvikmarka offers marked hiking trails and open rocky landscapes; Trondalen is also a place for mountain biking. If you are looking for hotels in Gressvik, these interests can help guide your plans for your stay.

Hiking and scenery in Gressvikmarka

Gressvikmarka has several well-marked hiking trails. The trail network includes rest benches and barbecue areas. When planning your hike, you can therefore take places to stop for a break into account as well as the route itself.

The peaks of Gressvikmarka have large, open expanses of smooth, polished rock. Heather and individual pine trees shape the landscape there. From these heights, the view stretches toward the city, Hvaler, the Swedish coast, the outer Oslofjord, Telemark and the mountain ridges to the north. The views therefore encompass coastal and fjord directions as well as vistas extending farther inland.

The route to Sprinklet and the Trondalsdammene

In Gressvik, a varied, illuminated hiking trail runs from Trondalen to Sprinklet. The viewing platform at Sprinklet is almost 130 metres above sea level. The tower is visible from large parts of Gressvik and serves as a distinctive landmark.

The hike to Sprinklet also offers the opportunity to take a detour to the Trondalsdammene. The dams were part of the old water supply system of the municipality of Onsøy. For travellers interested in local history, the detour thus adds a distinct historical dimension to the hike: it leads to structures that once served a purpose in the water supply system.

Mountain biking in Trondalen

Trondalen is suitable for mountain biking on roads and trails. There is also a pump track built by Gressvik IF. The roads and trails, and the pump track, offer two different options to consider when planning a cycling trip: you can choose between riding off-road or using the purpose-built track.

Fredrikstad as a wider travel destination

As a wider travel destination, Fredrikstad offers additional historical and cultural attractions. Kongsten Fort in Fredrikstad was built in 1685 as a bastion fort and is considered one of Norway’s best-preserved bastion forts. A surviving covered way connects the fort to the main fortress.

The Fredrikstad Museum is located in Tøihuset in the Old Town and comprises three exhibitions. At the museum, Bar 1567 presents the history of Fredrikstad in the form of a history bar. The Old Town Model Railway in Fredrikstad offers a different focus: it features trains, landscapes, buildings, people and animals at a scale of 1:87, and also includes a miniature of the Old Town.

The city ferry is also part of Fredrikstad’s travel offering. It runs year-round, is free of charge and provides access to the fortified town from the city centre, Cicignon and Gressvik. If you would like to use this connection, check the timetable before travelling.
