Engelsviken is a coastal community on Onsøy, just north of Hankø. Consider whether you would like your stay to focus on the harbour atmosphere, a coastal walk or the area's cultural history.

Harbour and getting there

Engelsviken guest harbour accommodates boats up to 40 feet long and is protected by a breakwater. It is run as a self-service harbour; envelopes are available in a box on the breakwater. There is a fuel station in the harbour, north of the restaurant.

Taking the bus to Engelsviken is an alternative; there are frequent services from Fredrikstad. Check the timetable before travelling, as service frequency may change. Parking in Engelsviken is limited—a practical consideration when planning your journey.

Coastal path and recreation areas

The coastal path runs south from Engelsviken. A circular walk can take you from Engelsviken via Flåtevika and back to the starting point, covering about 10 to 15 kilometres. Near Smausthavna, one section runs over rocks. The approximate distance can help you decide whether the route fits into your day's plans.

There is good parking near Solviken, and the walk from the car park to the recreation area is short. Solviken is signposted when you drive to Engelsviken via Fv 116 and then follow a local road. During the summer season, a wheelchair-accessible ramp to the bathing jetty is available there. Water quality at the bathing site is tested every two weeks during this season. There is also a campsite nearby with a kiosk, toilets and waste bins; check before your visit whether each facility is available.

Solvika on Engelsvikøya has a recreation area with a child-friendly sandy beach and rocks; the coastal path passes through it. These details add another perspective on the landscape to the route description. In Engelsviken itself, keep in mind that parking is limited; good parking is available around Solviken.

Fishing and coastal culture

Engelsviken has a long tradition of fishing and seafaring. In the past, it was an important fishing harbour with fish processing, including at Engelsviken Canning AS. Today, most processing takes place in Denmark and is managed from Engelsviken. The area's history therefore reflects both the former local processing industry and the way the sector is organised today.

The old Bjelland factory, also known as the ice house, is an example of functionalist architecture. The old Engelsviken school is an important cultural heritage site worthy of protection. Nearby, Teineholmen is an important part of the coastal cultural environment; the island was used to dry fish traps.

Buholmen in Engelsviksundet is also part of the history of herring fishing: during its heyday before the turn of the century, there was a salting facility there. The hut that gave the site its name was demolished in 1899 and moved to Finnmark. Another cultural event in the area's history is the summer performance featuring songs by Evert Taube, which was held for the 22nd time in Engelsviken in 2019.
