Vefsn is a vast region of high mountains, fjords, caves and rivers. The Vefsna is considered a good salmon river. Mosjøen lies where the Vefsna and Skjerva meet and flow into the Vefsnfjord. The river landscape and the town’s history are therefore distinct, yet equally striking, aspects of the destination.

Landscape, Peaks and Caves

Brurskanken is the second-highest peak in Vefsn. Another notable route is the Helgelandstrappa, which leads from the Vefsna just outside Mosjøen’s centre to the summit of Øyfjellet. The staircase has 4,175 steps and is considered the longest stone staircase in the world. Its route and number of steps make it a special destination for travellers interested in the region’s trails and landscapes.

In the surrounding area, above Mosjøen, lies Øyfjellgrotta, a 500-metre-long limestone cave. Guided tours are available and last about three hours. One of the cave’s features is an underground river that is dry in summer. If you add a cave tour to your schedule, allow for this duration.

Mosjøen’s History and Culture

Sjøgata is Mosjøen’s oldest district and a major tourist attraction, with several listed buildings. The Vefsn Museum’s historic walking tour passes through Sjøgata and offers insight into Mosjøen’s trading history. This allows visitors to explore the district not only through its buildings but also through its role in the history of trade.

Byparken in Mosjøen offers a different perspective: the cultural and historical site was protected under the Cultural Heritage Act in 2009. At the same time, Byparken is a public park open to everyone and serves as an open-air museum. Sjøgata and Byparken thus offer different highlights for visitors with an interest in history.

Swimming Spots and Finnvika

The swimming spots also differ in their features. Bystranda is a bathing beach more than 200 metres long, with coral sand, a playground and a fire pit. Mosjøen’s central town beach offers white sand, palm trees and a playground as well. These details can help you choose between the two beach destinations based on what you look for in a swimming spot.

Finnvika has masonry remains from the Second World War, part of an unfinished slipway for small boats. An easily accessible path leads from the car park to the bay; there is also a diving platform. Historic remains and facilities for swimmers are side by side here.

Sport, Music and Local Cuisine

Kjemsåsen Alpine Centre near Mosjøen has a children’s slope as well as green, red and black runs for different ability levels. Kippermoen Sports Centre offers a sports pool, a heated therapy pool, a paddling pool, a diving tower and a water slide. The two facilities offer different experiences: outdoor downhill runs at one, and several pools and water features at the other.

The Kulturverkstedet Mosjøen hosts a lunchtime concert every Friday featuring local musicians, enthusiastic amateurs and professional musicians. Festspillene Helgeland is a festival week in Mosjøen with more than 100 events and 30 exhibitions; details may vary from one edition to the next. Traditional dishes are served in the Kulturverkstedet café. The venue brings music and food together, while the festival offers a wider cultural programme in the town.
