Rana offers a variety of reasons to stay: historic buildings at Stenneset, art in the Ranfjord, museums and experiences underground. Cross-country ski trails, hiking trails and leisure activities are also among the things you can consider when planning your trip. Mo i Rana can be reached by road, rail or air; check current timetables and connections for your journey.

Culture and Art in Rana

The Stenneset open-air museum features 18 historic buildings dating from 1750 to 1890. Its outdoor areas are accessible year-round and provide a starting point for hiking trails to Båsmolia and Båsmomarka. Conditions may vary locally, so it is worth checking them if you are planning a hike. The Stenneset restaurant is located in the rectory; check current opening hours before your trip.

Havmannen, a work by English artist Antony Gormley, is Rana’s contribution to the Nordland Sculpture Landscape. The sculpture stands in the Ranfjord, about 15 metres from the shore. For a different cultural interest, the Rana Museum offers insights into Sámi history and culture, industrial history and local chapters of the Second World War. Nordland Teater is headquartered in Mo i Rana.

Special events at Stenneset, including the traditional Stennesdagen, feature activities for children of all ages, a market and demonstrations of traditional crafts. Dates and programmes may vary. In Mo i Rana, you can also explore nature, technology and mathematics at the interactive Vitensenter Nordland science centre and learn through experiments; check current visitor information before your visit.

Caves and Hiking

Grønligrotta in Mo i Rana consists of a network of passages carved out by water and ice over 700,000 years. On a guided tour, you pass potholes, an underground stream, a waterfall, marble formations, stalactites and a trapped granite boulder. A tour takes about 45 to 60 minutes and is suitable for visitors of all ages. During the summer season, tours run daily at set times; tickets can be purchased on site, and advance booking is not required. Check current dates and conditions before your trip.

Setergrotta offers a different kind of cave experience: you climb between large boulders, squeeze through narrow passages and enter vast rock chambers. Before taking part, check that these physical demands are suitable for you. For a hike, Tjuvtrappa is an easy option along a well-maintained trail. The view faces northwest and may include sunsets or the northern lights.

The historic Telegrafruta runs from Rana in the south to Saltdal in the north; sections can be hiked on the way towards the Arctic Circle. Rana therefore offers both shorter trails and a route with a longer regional scope. In the north, the municipal boundary runs through Svartisen. Austerdalsisen, north of Mo i Rana, is considered the most easily accessible glacier tongue of Svartisen; check local conditions before visiting.

Ski Trails and Leisure Activities

The cross-country ski routes described here vary considerably in length: the Klokkerhagen ski trail offers 6.4 kilometres of groomed tracks near the centre of Mo i Rana. There are several designated rest areas along the route; the section from Revelneset to the end is lit. Grooming and lighting depend on seasonal conditions. Nearby, Skillevollen Idrettspark has a network of cross-country ski trails from 1 to 25 kilometres, some of which are lit. Check conditions before using the trails in winter.

Skillevollen Sports Park has ski slopes and a biathlon stadium; seasonal operations may vary. Another nearby destination is Hauknesstranda, a beach and recreation area on the south shore of the Ranfjord. It has walking paths, benches, barbecue areas, a volleyball court and opportunities for fishing from the rocks. For swimming and recreation, Moheia Bad is open year-round and has four pools, a water slide, saunas and a café. Check current opening details before your visit.
