Værøy: Coastal History and Seabird Areas
Accommodation in Værøy
Værøy lies between the island of Moskenes to the north and Røst to the south. White sandy beaches, bird cliffs and distinctive natural surroundings define the area. At the same time, local history stretches from traces of settlement from different periods to fishing culture. The range spans protected breeding areas to traces of trade and fishing.
Breeding Areas and Scenic Trails
East of Værøy lies the Hundholmen nature reserve, which protects an important seabird breeding area. Seasonal restrictions apply to landing there. The southwest of Værøy is also an important breeding area, home to puffins, kittiwakes, razorbills and guillemots. Populations may change over time.
Along the trail to Håen, you can see restored eagle houses. From the summit of Håen, the trail offers views of Måstad and Måhornet; visibility depends on the weather. Along the way, you can encounter historic traces and views of the landscape.

On Værøy, eagles were caught by hand from the 17th century until protection began in 1968. The telegraph station, which opened in 1910, is now a cultural heritage site that conveys local history. Værøy’s old church is the oldest church building in Lofoten.
