Mo i Rana combines key cultural sites and city history with winter activities in the surrounding area. When planning your stay, consider whether travelling by rail, visiting museums and art venues, or taking part in seasonal outdoor activities will shape your visit.

Getting here and finding your way around

Mo i Rana lies on the Nordland Line between Trondheim and Bodø. The train journey takes approximately six hours from Trondheim and approximately three hours from Bodø; the station is only a short walk from the centre. The E6 European route also runs directly through Mo i Rana. If you are travelling by train, check journey times and timetables again before departure.

Science and city history

Vitensenter Nordland is centrally located at Midtre gate 1. Children and adults can enjoy interactive exhibitions and activities about science, technology and mathematics. The entire exhibition area and entrance are step-free and fully wheelchair accessible. Confirm the current access arrangements before your trip; individual exhibitions and activities may change. Next to Vitensenter Nordland is Sjyén Restaurant, which focuses on high-quality regional ingredients from Helgeland. Restaurant operations and the menu may change.

Rana Museum is located alongside the science centre in the converted “Moment” shopping centre near the centre. The “Jern” exhibition features images and objects from Rana’s industrial history; a bulldozer from the construction period is also on display. A digital city model looks back at the history of the old settlement of Mo i Rana and offers a virtual tour of its streets. For a different perspective on the city’s history, visit Moholmen: the oldest district comprises around 20 well-preserved and restored wooden houses dating from the 19th century.

Art and performing arts

Havmannen stands in the Ranfjord, about 15 metres from the shore. The sculpture is by English artist Antony Gormley and is the municipality of Rana’s contribution to Skulpturlandskap Nordland. The street-art trail in Mo i Rana features graffiti by artists from around the world. At Nordland Teater, performances take place across four venues in Rådhusalleen: Hovedscena, Black Box, Teaterkafeen and Rugekassa. This offers a chance to explore public art in the city, theatre and the museum collection shaped by the industrial past as distinct cultural highlights.

Winter activities nearby

In winter, ski lifts at Skillevollen take skiers up the mountain. The area is about a 10- to 15-minute drive from the city centre. There are also groomed cross-country ski trails, including five kilometres lit at night. Lift operations, grooming and lighting are seasonal; check conditions before your outing. The options also differ by activity: ski lifts for downhill skiing or trails for cross-country skiing.

The caves around Mo i Rana also offer different experiences. Grønligrotta has safe, well-lit paths suitable for the whole family. Access and guided tours may vary by season. Nearby Setergrotta offers a more adventurous cave expedition, where a headlamp is the only light to guide the way. The main difference between the two is whether you prefer illuminated paths or an expedition by headlamp.
