Church, architecture and music

Tverlandet Church is a brick church built in 1983 and designed by architect Reidar Berg. The church interior contains a large altarpiece woven by Else Marie Jacobsen. The space is often used as a concert venue for choirs and brass bands. Its history, textile art and use for music give the church several cultural connections that go beyond its architecture.

Saltstraumen nearby

The Saltstraumen marine protected area lies near Tverlandet. It is internationally significant as a recreational area and is a well-known tourist destination. For directions on Fv. 17: the turnoff towards Saltstraumen is about 2 miles straight past Tverlandet; from there, continue for another 12 km on Fv. 17. Bodø as the wider travel destination

In the wider travel destination of Bodø, the Kyststien offers another route in its own right: it runs for 6.5 km from Bodøsjøen to Mørkvedbukta. Along the way are viewpoints, picnic spots and benches; the Kyststien is accessible. Bodø is also home to the Norwegian Aviation Museum, on Stormyra near the city centre. Covering 10,000 square metres, it presents the history of military and civil aviation, including the U-2, Starfighter and Spitfire aircraft. The interactive exhibition “Bli pilot” invites visitors to try it out for themselves and compete against family or friends.

The Saltstraumen channel is also part of the wider Bodø travel destination. It is 3 km long and 150 m wide, and the current reaches speeds of up to 20 knots. These measurements add context to Saltstraumen as a distinct regional point of interest, without equating it with the nature reserve on the Tverlandet Peninsula.
