Bodø: Culture, city history and riverside paths
Accommodation in Bodø
Bodø brings together coastal history, urban architecture and paths through diverse landscapes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bodø, the themes of your trip can help you decide: museums and architectural history offer a different focus from spending time by the river or enjoying sweeping views of the city and mountains.
Cultural history and architecture
The Norwegian Jekt Trade Museum tells the story of the coastal culture of Northern Norway and how traditional jekts connected the region with the rest of Europe. The museum houses the only original jekt from Nordland that has been preserved. This lets you explore the jekt trade through an original vessel that has survived to this day. The Bodøsjøen Outdoor Museum complements and deepens the presentation of Northern Norway and the fisher-farmer society at the Norwegian Jekt Trade Museum. Its 14 historic buildings add another dimension to this interpretation of history.
Bodø Cathedral also has distinctive architectural features: it was built as a basilica in the Gothic style. Its interior includes a 12-metre-high stained-glass window, ten tapestries from Nordland and a rose window. Bodø City Museum is located in the centre of Bodø in one of the city’s oldest buildings, built in 1903. Here, the history of the museum meets the architectural history of the building.
The Norwegian Aviation Museum presents Norway’s military and civil aviation history and features the interactive exhibition “Become a Pilot”. Museum visitors can also climb the old control tower at Bodø Airport and watch current air traffic from there. If you’re planning to visit the tower, check whether access is available before your visit.
Riverside path and views
The path along the Bodøelv runs through flat terrain beside a river. The landscape alternates between expansive open farmland, tall trees, open meadows and undergrowth. The path is suitable for cyclists, walkers and people with or without a stroller. It’s a practical way to experience the riverside landscape in different ways.
Keiservarden offers a different perspective: from there, the 360-degree view takes in Bodø and the mountains. The starting point for the Keiservarden trail is at the car park at Rønvikfjellet, about 3.5 kilometres from the city centre. This gives you two distinct landscape perspectives: flat terrain along the Bodøelv and panoramic views from Keiservarden.
Getting there and other highlights
Bodø can be reached by plane, train, car, the Hurtigruten coastal express and express boat. Check connections and timetables before your trip. There’s also a bus connection to the Bodøelv area: from the city centre, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the area by bus, getting off at the Maskinisten stop. Buses also run to Bodøsjøen daily. If you’re using this information to plan your trip, check the latest timetables.
Pust Sauna is located in Bodø’s inner harbour. This unique building offers a place for wellbeing and socialising. For a taste of the city’s history, visit Vengen Skafferi restaurant at the Norwegian Jekt Trade Museum, where dishes inspired by the history of the jekt trade are served. If you’re planning to visit the restaurant, check availability in advance.
