Øydegard – Storrundt and local history
Accommodation in Øydegard
This can help you decide whether to focus more on the route and landscape or on architectural and transport history during your stay.
Storrundt: route and activities
Storrundt is a 4.3-kilometre hiking trail between Øydegard, Kjervika and Eikrem in Straumsnes. It opened in 1998 and starts in the open countryside near Øydegard golfbane. There are several benches along the route, and the signs give local place names and the names of trees. The length, starting point and signage offer different points of reference to help you factor the trail into your travel plans.
You can walk Storrundt with a stroller, cycle or run. These options suit different ways of getting around; which one fits your stay depends on your plans. Check the current condition of the trail before your visit.
Storrundt leads to Eikrem, a nearby place regarded as the northernmost place in the world where oak forest grows naturally. This landscape connection adds a distinctive feature of Eikrem to the trail description; Eikrem is separate from Øydegard.
Another point of reference for sports is Øydegard golfbane, Tingvoll golfklubb’s own six-hole golf course. The description of the area therefore includes two clearly distinct points of interest: Storrundt, a 4.3-kilometre trail, and the six-hole golf course. Both can be taken into account when choosing what you want to do on your trip.
Summer villas and architectural history
Furuly, also called the Fasting Villa, was the first summer villa in Straumsnes and was built in the late 19th century. Its first owner was the lawyer Thomas Fasting. The villa’s name, date of construction and owner give it a specific historical context. By comparison, the Trumpy Villa at Solbakken dates from the early 20th century. It was probably supplied by Thams at Løkken verk (Thamsbanen). The two construction dates highlight different historical periods; the attribution of the Trumpy Villa’s origin remains uncertain. The wider travel destination of Tingvoll also has a historic landmark: Tingvoll kirke dates from around 1180 and is also known as Nordmørsdomen.
Straumsnes bygdemuseum is the oldest building in the county specifically built as a museum. This age distinction applies to buildings constructed for that purpose, not to every building in the county. This precise distinction highlights what makes the museum’s building history special.
The former steamship service
Øydegard kai is also part of the area’s history: until 1957, the quay was a steamship quay. That year, the steamship service between Kristiansund and Sunndalsøra was discontinued. The year links the quay’s former function with the end of the service, placing both facts in the same historical context.
