Kvanne – Cultural Environments and Nearby Trails
Accommodation in Kvanne
Two themes shape the way visitors see Kvanne: cultural environments in the area and hiking destinations nearby. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the named trails by their landscapes: Mulneset leads through the forest to a viewpoint, while the routes on Strengen and KlĂĄberget offer elevated views over fjords and mountains.
Cultural history in Kvanne
Kvanne fornminne, an Iron Age cooking-pit site, is located at Skrivarstua. It is automatically protected and is of national importance. Kvanne Strandstad is a regionally significant cultural environment with a trading site, a waterfront area and a cluster of wooden houses. Strandstad is considered an old administrative and trading centre. This means that Kvanne has both an archaeological site and a cultural environment associated with trade and administration.
Three farm complexes are also protected as cultural environments of national importance: Skrivarstua, Nerlånna and Sjefsgarden. They were protected by resolution. Together with the archaeological site and Strandstad, the three complexes illustrate different facets of Kvanne’s cultural heritage: archaeological evidence, a trading and waterfront environment, and farmsteads.
Hiking destinations nearby
The trail to Klåberget starts at Vang Ski Arena in Røgrenda. From a junction about one kilometre from the Kvanne ferry quay, a signposted road leads to the trailhead, where there is a signposted free car park. Klåberget lies on a ridge about 600 metres high on the slope of Strengen and offers unobstructed panoramic views of fjords and mountain landscapes.
Strengen can be reached from Kvanne via Vang Ski Arena. The side road is signposted, there is a car park at the trailhead, and the route is marked and signposted. The summit is 890 metres high. The trail first passes through forest; above the tree line, it opens up to views over fjords and mountain landscapes. By comparison, the route to KlĂĄberget follows a lower ridge on the slope of Strengen, while the trail on Strengen climbs to the summit at 890 metres.
Mulneset offers a different perspective on the landscape: the forest trail leads to a scenic, sea-facing viewpoint opposite the Kvanne ferry quay. The trail starts at Søyset, near Kvanne. The access road branches off County Road 670 about 900 metres from the ferry quay.
More destinations in the wider Surnadal destination
Surnadal also has its own nature and cultural attractions. Svinviks arboret is situated between steep mountains and the Todalsfjord. Its collection includes 350 rhododendron species and hundreds of conifer species; there is also a seasonal summer café. The arboretum thus combines botanical collections with a location between fjord and mountains.
Vaulen, a state-secured recreation area, is also in Surnadal. Marked trails lead from the ends of the roads at Krokvatnet or SolĂĄsvatnet about four kilometres to Vaulen. Renting Vaulen includes the use of a canoe and a boat.
Cultural attractions in Surnadal include Kallastuå, an art museum and gallery on Telesbøen named after the late visual artist Kalla Skrøvseth. Åsen bygdemuseum is a traditional open-air museum with buildings from different periods and local history collections. Visits to the exhibitions are possible by prior booking and during events. The grounds are open at all times, even when the exhibitions are closed.
