Bæverfjorden: Swimming and Hiking
Accommodation in Bæverfjorden
When planning a trip to Bæverfjorden, you can choose from swimming spots, a circular route and hiking trails with named destinations. The options differ in location, distance and terrain. This lets you decide whether you would prefer to include a loop, a hike to a specific destination or a swimming spot in your trip.
Swimming at Flessastranda, Einholmen and in Bøverdalen
Flessastranda has some facilities for swimming and day trips. There is a swimming spot at the holiday-home area of Einholmen, at the mouth of the Bøvra. In the surrounding area, people also swim in a waterfall in Bøverdalen, between the Hallmyra and Toresetra farms. The locations therefore range from Flessastranda and the mouth of the Bøvra to a waterfall in the valley.
Circular route and hiking trails
Rundt om Kraftstasjonen is a circular route that can be completed on foot, by bicycle or jogging. It runs mostly on asphalt and good gravel roads through relatively flat terrain. For many, the suspension bridge over the Bøvra is a highlight of the route. If there is a lot of snow on the suspension bridge, you can follow the same route there and back. The recommended place to park is the area by Bøfjorden og Bæverfjord oppvekstsenter, about 300 metres up Bøverdalsvegen.
From Bøverfjorden, a 4.4 km hiking trail leads to Salvatna and a 6.8 km trail to Liabekken. The trail from Heggemsneset to Blåfjellet is 8 km long. Based on the stated distances, Salvatna is the shortest of these routes and Heggemsneset–Blåfjellet is the longest; Liabekken lies between them. The circular route differs from these trails in that it can be travelled in three specified ways, while the hiking trails lead to specific destinations.
Bøverfjordsetra in Bøverdalen
Several old seter buildings remain at Bøverfjordsetra in nearby Bøverdalen. Bøverfjordsetra is a hiking destination in both summer and winter. When the ground is free of snow, you can walk there in jogging or hiking shoes; in winter, you can go on snowshoes.
The first section of the trail is quite steep. The final section to the seter meadow, by contrast, is only gently undulating and has a slight incline. Rundt om Kraftstasjonen, in comparison, runs through relatively flat terrain. The two trail descriptions therefore differ considerably in their terrain profiles.
Access to Bøverfjordsetra begins at the intersection in the centre of Bøverfjorden. After a few kilometres in Bøverdalen, a gravel road leads to a few parking spaces at the start of the forest trail. Thus, both the starting point in the town centre and the rest of the access route through the valley are specified.
Nature in the wider Surnadal destination
The wider Surnadal destination also offers a botanical highlight: Svinviks arboret contains 350 species of rhododendron and hundreds of species of conifers. It is situated between steep mountains and the Todalsfjord. The arboretum has a summer café; check before your trip whether it will be open on your travel dates.
