Accommodation in Surnadal
When searching for a hotel in Surnadal, it can help to consider which places you would like to focus on during your stay: culture at Skei, a hiking route, or a place of historical significance. Surnadal kulturhus brings together several cultural facilities, and several hikes have clearly named starting points. The cultural offerings and the different trailheads each offer a distinct focus.
Culture at Skei
At Skei, Surnadal kulturhus houses a cinema as well as a concert and theatre hall; there is also a gallery. Storstuå has a large stage and a backstage area with most of the necessary facilities. As the facilities may change, confirm their current status if it is important to your visit.
For getting around Skei: Surnadal Library is on the second floor of the cultural centre, at Svartvassvegen 1. There is a bus and taxi stop by the cultural centre, and the building is wheelchair accessible. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date. This helps you understand the locations of the library, cultural centre and stop in relation to one another.
Historic sites
Skei kyrkjestad is a medieval cultural heritage site. It is automatically protected and classified as being of national importance. At Kleiva above Skei, local history is connected with Hans Hyldbakk: Kleiva was once the home of the village poet. The buildings at Kleiva now belong to Nordmørsmusea.
Hiking trails and their starting points
The popular circular route via Omfløddøra is in central Surnadal, starts at Skei and begins near the bus stop. The trail to Roparen starts at the car park by Surnadal alpinsenter. For the trail to Knyken, there is a car park at the end of the toll road through the Skeisnebba cabin area. When planning, you can first consider which starting point suits you: the bus stop near Omfløddøra, or the respective named car parks for Roparen and Knyken.
Honnstadknyken, also called Knyken, is 1,071 metres high in central Surnadal. The Knyken trail is signposted to national standards; many of its wettest sections have been reinforced with stones and boardwalks. If you are looking for a route or the mountain, both names are useful: Honnstadknyken refers to the mountain, and Knyken is also used as a name.
The trail to Kleiva starts almost at the bus stop at Skei. It can be walked year-round when road conditions are suitable; it is not cleared in winter and may be slippery in places. When planning, take into account both the road conditions required for year-round access and the lack of winter snow clearance and possible slippery patches; check conditions before setting out.
