Several routes offer different perspectives on Sørbrandal: from the viewpoint overlooking Fiskå to mountain valleys, a dam at Børevatnet, and an old cultural landscape. When planning your stay, it is worth considering views, route layout, terrain, and access separately. This can help you assess which landscape features and route characteristics matter most for your trip planning.

Routes and Viewpoints

The route from Ytre Strand to the dam at Børevatnet leads to the dam in Brandal. From Nyklen, the view stretches more than 180 degrees across Fiskå, from Lilsjeeide to Hundsnes. The viewpoint therefore offers a wide perspective over the named places and provides a different experience from the trails through the mountain valleys.

The marked Hundsnes–Brandalsdemningen route crosses the mountain between Hundsnes and the dam at the end of Børevatnet. Its gentle mountain valleys are contrasted by a somewhat steep ascent or descent in places on the Hundsnes side; however, this section follows a trail. The description thus combines a specific terrain feature with useful guidance on the route.

On the Hovda rundt route, there is a furnished picnic area in Brandal, beside the road near the power station, with views of the fjord. In the area around Sørbrandal, the Hovda rundt cycling route also runs toward Brandal and Åram. The wider fjord offers sweeping views inland toward the Sunnmørsalpane mountains and out to sea. The picnic area and cycling route offer different viewpoints along their respective routes.

Access and Trail Surface

For the Fiskåbrauta–Kvanndalen–Brandalsosen route, the turnoff from Fv 2 in Sørbrandal is a useful landmark: the trailhead is by a white masonry house. From the trailhead at Brandal, access follows a 4 km toll road to the parking area. About half of the route is on a gravel track. Access and trail surface are two practical considerations you can take into account separately when planning your route.

A toll road connects Sørbrandal to Børevatnet and provides access to the Hundsnes–Brandalsdemningen route. Road conditions and toll details may change; check both before driving. For the Hundsnes–Brandalsdemningen route, there is also a road connection to a start or end point from the Brandal side. The access routes described provide specific guidance, but do not amount to a single approach for all routes.

Cultural Landscape and History

On the Hovda rundt route, the trail passes through an old cultural landscape. Its vegetation has been shaped over many centuries by livestock and coastal farmers. The landscape is therefore closely tied to a long history of use. If you are interested not only in views and terrain but also in the cultural and historical influences on a landscape, this route offers a distinct focus.

The Fiskåbrauta–Kvanndalen–Brandalsosen route is also well established in the area. Its history includes the fact that many farms in Fiskå had a summer dairy at Kvanndalsvatnet (Mørkevatnet). The route and the former use of the summer dairies are two aspects of the area that can be considered together when planning your trip.

Vanylven as a Wider Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Vanylven offers other points of interest that can complement a trip beyond Sørbrandal. Vanylven lies between Stad and Ålesund and can be included in a round trip through northwestern Norway. In Åheim stands St. Jetmund’s Church, one of Norway’s oldest stone churches, built around 1150. The local community uses it for services and events. You can also explore the old olivine mines along the Åheimselva. These regional destinations add to the picture of Vanylven, while Sørbrandal’s routes and landscapes provide the local focus.
