Sekken is ideal for a trip where hiking trails, viewpoints and local history shape the day’s plans. The journey from Molde to Sekken takes just over half an hour. The “Sekken rundt” tour begins as soon as you leave the ferry on Sekken; the ferry terminal is also a convenient starting point for the hike to Vassura.

Hiking Among Mountain Peaks and Fjord Views

The “Toppløype på Sekken” is a circular trail that crosses several peaks and passes viewpoints. At 304 metres, Tranhaugen is the highest peak on Sekken. From there, the 360-degree view extends across much of the Romsdalsfjord. Several peaks and viewpoints shape the character of this tour.

Vassura is 295 metres high and offers views of the village and surrounding area. For visitors, the ferry terminal is the most convenient starting point for the hike there. The viewpoints offer different perspectives: from Tranhaugen, the view stretches far across the fjord, while Vassura overlooks the village and its surroundings.

Another landmark is Teppinga, an old embankment on Fjellvegen. This gravel hiking trail crosses the island of Sekken. There are rest areas with benches near Teppinga. From there, you can turn back or continue along the trail to the village on the south side of the island. At this point, you can decide whether to return the way you came or continue the hike.

A gentle hike to Gapahuken ved Eikamyra follows forest roads and well-maintained paths. Along the way, there are views south across the Romsdalsfjord. If you’re looking for another hiking option besides the mountain peak routes, this trail offers a different kind of scenery.

Getting Around by Bike and Bus

There is also a cycling route called “Sekken rundt”; it is 20 kilometres long. The distance gives you a specific reference point when planning a cycling trip. Hiking and cycling are two different ways to experience the island.

The bus passes the church at the eastern end of the island, the shop, the school and the museum, and stops at Vestadstranda. As timetables can change, check the current timetable before travelling.

Church, Memorial Sites and Museum

Sekken kirke dates from 1908. A memorial stele at the church commemorates the Battle of Sekken. The church council of Sekken menighet occasionally holds concerts in the church. At Sekkenes, you can also find the Bauta, erected by the people of Sekken in memory of King Håkon Herdebrei and the Battle of Sekken in 1162. The church, stele and Bauta offer different ways to connect with the island’s history.

To arrange a guided tour of Sekken Museum, you need to make an enquiry; groups should book in advance. The seasonal café in “Gamle Bedehus” is run by volunteers and is scheduled to open in summer and early autumn. Check whether the café is open before visiting. Galleri Sekken regularly hosts exhibitions; if you’re planning a visit, it’s worth checking the current exhibition programme.
