The former church site and the Haram find tell of different periods in Haram’s history: from a church that stood by the sea in the 12th century to a significant Iron Age grave find. Nearby, trails, viewpoints and leisure activities add to the picture. This lets you include cultural history and outdoor activities in your travel plans.

Church history and the Haram find

A memorial stone and a park mark the former church site of Haram. The first church was built on the Haram farm in the 12th century: a small stave church that stood right by the sea. When a new church was built in 1838, the church site was moved from Haram to Austnes. The former site is automatically protected as Cultural Heritage Site No. 17; the municipal cultural heritage plan relating to it dates from September 17, 2019.

The Haram find also points to a long history. It is an Iron Age archaeological find from Haram and is among the richest grave finds from the Roman Iron Age (AD 0–400) in Norway. Haram is therefore home to two distinct historical features: the former church site and a significant Iron Age find.

Hikes and activities nearby

The hike to Ulla Fyr follows a gravel road and can also be completed by wheelchair users. Weather and surface conditions can affect accessibility; check conditions before setting out. Fishing is possible at the rocks of Kvernholmen as part of the hike. Wrasse are often found there, along with the occasional mackerel and other fish species.

Ravens and eagles are often seen on the hike to Mannen. Such sightings vary by season and are not guaranteed. The trails therefore offer different highlights: at Ulla Fyr, the gravel road and fishing opportunity at Kvernholmen are among the experiences described; at Mannen, the focus is on the possibility of spotting wildlife.

The trail to Stormyrhytta passes through the forest and offers several viewpoints. The area is home to a varied birdlife, although sightings vary by season. Stormyrhytta is used for social gatherings and games; canoeing is also possible there during the summer months.

The marked hiking trail to Røhammaren offers views of the islands and the mainland. Views and trail conditions depend on the weather. At the end of the trail, Stormyrhytta offers access to a kayak, a toilet and a fire pit. Check the current availability of these facilities before visiting.
