Haram includes a mainland area on the peninsula between Grytafjorden and Midfjorden, as well as four of the Nordøyane islands. The islands of Haramsøy and Flemsøy/Skuløy are also part of Nordøyane; Longvafjorden separates them from one another. Haram therefore brings together the mainland and island communities, with mountains, paths along the shore and cultural sites offering different starting points for your trip.

Mountains and views in Haram

The trail to Gamlemsveten leads to a summit at an elevation of 790 metres, where a television mast stands. From there, the view stretches south, west and north. BlĂĄskjerdingen offers a different scale of elevation: at 1,061 metres, it is the highest mountain in Haram, and the summit plateau offers views in every direction.

The viewpoints from the other mountains are different, too. From Hildrehesten, you can see Nordøyane, the shipping route, and Hildre, Alvestad, Brattvåg and Hellandshamn. From Håvikhornet, the view stretches across the whole of Samfjord and the surrounding mountains and fjords; a white-tailed eagle may be spotted during the ascent. From Vegardvarden, the panorama takes in Søvika, Gamlem, Nordøyane and Ålesund. Skulen is the highest point on Flemsøy/Skuløy; from Skulebua, the view extends to the horizon and the mountain ranges on the mainland.

Paths by the lake, fjord and coast

The circular route around Synnalandsvatnet is just over five kilometres long. It follows a lit gravel path and is suitable for walking and cycling, as well as for pushchairs and wheelchairs. This route therefore differs from the mountain trails and longer excursions in its explicitly stated uses. The hike to Ulla Fyr is also accessible to wheelchair users.

For a waterside destination, the Slyngstad–Fannevatnet route follows a gently undulating gravel path beside a lake with small beaches and swimming spots. At Risneset, along Remmevegen—a walking and horse-riding trail—there is a sandy beach with good swimming opportunities. Along Remmevegen, you can see domesticated and wild animals; with luck, you may also spot a white-tailed eagle in the sky. The view of Samfjord and the possibility of spotting an eagle from Håvikhornet offer another perspective on nature, this time during the ascent.

The paddling trip on Longvafjorden passes through relatively sheltered waters in Haram. It begins and ends at Gunnabuda in Longva on Flemsøy/Skuløy. For another combination of physical activity and purpose-built facilities, the trip to the Gjersetdalen wilderness area leads to a site with a guild hall, a Red Cross cabin, water activities and an activity park.

Cultural sites and history

The cultural trail around Lepsøya combines a hike with cultural and prehistoric monuments. Information boards and boxes containing a local audio guide add to the experience. Coastal Fort Bjørnøya, with its bunkers and trenches from the Second World War, offers insight into wartime history.

Churches and lighthouses add their own distinctive touches. Haram Church on Haramsøya is an octagonal wooden church dating from 1838. Vatne Church is a wooden long church built in 1868. Ulla Fyr is a lighthouse station on Kvernholmen at the northwestern tip of Haramsøya. Lepsøyrev Fyr was located between Lepsøya and the mainland, northeast of Ålesund in Haram. The lighthouse was in operation from 1879 to 2014; after its renovation in 2014, the lighthouse station opened to tourists for daytime visits.

Fjørtoft has a fishing museum, while Longva on Skuløya has a coastal museum. A collection of prehistoric finds is located in Otterlei on Fjørtoft. These places complement the hiking trails and historic sites with insights into fishing and early history.
