Skrova: Nature, Island History and Hotels
Accommodation in Skrova
Skrova combines nature experiences on the mountain and by the water with insights into the island’s history. To decide whether the destination suits your stay, there are several highlights to consider: a hike described as easy, white beaches, a sea-kayaking tour around the island, and cultural stops ranging from a photo exhibition to a coastal fort. You can plan your trip around whether you are most interested in landscapes, activities at sea or history.
Mountain Views and Beaches
Skrovafjellet and bathing spots such as Hattvika are designated as important areas for nature and recreation. The hike up Skrova Mountain is considered easy and suitable for most people. Check the terrain and conditions before setting out. From Skrova Mountain, you can look out over the entire Lofoten Wall, as well as Steigen and Hamarøy on the opposite side.
Skrova’s beaches are white and considered suitable for a morning swim at any time of year. Swimming conditions depend on the weather. The coast therefore offers a different experience from the view from the mountain: here, the water takes centre stage; there, the view stretches across the landscape.
Photo Exhibitions and Island History
Skrova has an outdoor photo exhibition. Another cultural stop is an audiovisual cultural walk through the history of the fishing village. It ends at a tunnel photo exhibition depicting 100 years of Skrova’s history. The walk also covers stories of fishing and whaling associated with the island. Check the dates of the cultural walk before your visit.
Those interested in wartime history can walk to an old coastal fort built by the Germans during the war. Cannons remain in the fort area; there are also house ruins and remains of wartime defensive positions. HeimBrygga offers another glimpse into the area’s history with a building that is itself part of the local landscape: the 200-year-old wooden building is the oldest Brygga on Skrova still in operation.
The tradition of skrei fishing is also kept alive on Skrova. The festival and the fishing itself are reasons to visit; check the dates of the seasonal festival before your trip. Restaurants on Skrova, including Fotobrygga, serve local food. Check in advance whether it will be available during your stay.
Sea Kayaking and Getting There
Skrova Kayak Adventures offers sea-kayaking trips to explore the waters around the island. Availability is seasonal, so check before your trip. Participants meet at the Heimbrygga restaurant for the tour, about 50 metres from Skrova ferry port. Also confirm the latest meeting details in advance.
The ferry operates on the Svolvær (Osan)–Skrova–Skutvik route. Another way to get there is the Bodø–Skrova–Svolvær express boat, which is for foot passengers only. Ferry service availability and timetables are seasonal; check the connection before travelling. You should also check the express boat times in advance. This makes it possible to plan your journey and the activities that interest you on Skrova together.
