Henningsvær is spread across several small islands connected to one another and the mainland by bridges. Its island setting provides the backdrop for a place whose history is closely tied to Lofoten’s fishing industry and which also offers art, crafts, and activities in nature. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these aspects distinct: the cultural program and fishing history have different focuses from kayaking, RIB trips, or hiking.

An island village with a fishing history

Henningsvær played a significant role in the fishing history of Lofoten. It is the best-preserved fishing village in the archipelago and a cultural heritage site of national importance. The village is also one of Norway’s 13 protected cultural environments. This protection aims to preserve one of the country’s most significant fishing villages.

The historic KaviarFactory now houses international contemporary art and is also an important monument to Lofoten’s fishing industry. The church also connects local history and architecture: built in 1852, it is a significant cultural and historical landmark and is considered an example of traditional Norwegian wooden architecture.

Art and crafts

Galleri Lofoten is located right by the quay at the harbor. Among other works, the gallery displays sculptures by Nico Widerberg and one of the largest collections of 19th-century paintings from Northern Norway. A historical exhibition is devoted to Henningsvær and includes tools and equipment from the Lofoten fishing industry. The gallery thus brings works of art and objects from fishing history together.

Engelskmannsbrygga is a lively center for crafts in Henningsvær. The Engelskmannsbrygga gallery offers a wide selection of crafts, preserving traditional techniques through modern design. Local artisans make pottery, glass objects, and jewelry. The village’s cultural offerings therefore include both visual art and handcrafted works.

Festival and outdoor activities

Trevarefest takes place annually in Henningsvær in late July. The music and cultural festival features live concerts, DJ sets, talks, and workshops in and around Trevarefabrikken.

On the water, the safaris on offer differ, among other things, in how you get around. The two-hour guided Kayak Nature Safari introduces participants to the birdlife and marine life of Lofoten and is also suitable for visitors with little or no kayaking experience. There is a high chance of seeing white-tailed eagles and other birds on the tour. Another nature and sea eagle safari explores the area in large RIB boats; several pairs of white-tailed eagles have their own territories in this area. Comparing kayaking and RIBs gives you a practical point of difference when planning your trip.

For a nearby hiking option, consider Festvågtinden: the steep summit hike starts just above Henningsvær and offers views of the village and Vestfjord. Henningsvær also has a climbing and skiing community with its own meeting place called Klatrekafeen.

Food and getting there

The seafood on offer in Henningsvær includes skrei cod prepared in various ways, as well as other local specialties.

Taking the bus is recommended for traveling to Henningsvær. If you are planning to take the bus, check the timetable before setting out. The road from the E10 to Henningsvær is narrow and can be challenging for some drivers. If you arrive by car, use the larger parking lots and explore the village on foot.
