Sørvågen Radio and telecommunications history

Sørvågen Radio is a telecommunications museum housed in the former telegraph and telephone exchange. The building was constructed in 1914 based on a design by Lilla Georgine Hansen, Norway’s first female architect. The collection is dedicated to local and national telecommunications history. In this way, the building, its former use and the collection share a common historical context.

Walks and RIB safari

In Sørvågen, you can walk to the waterfall at Studalselva or take a loop around Lake Sørvågvatnet. This gives you two different walking destinations to choose from: the waterfall or the lake.

The RIB safari in the Maelstrom departs from Sørvågen. During the trip, it makes a detour to the skerries of Svarvan and Buholman, where northern gannets and other seabirds can be found. The safari also passes Hell and Refsvika, on the islands’ rugged, remote side. These two abandoned settlements offer a glimpse of how life was shaped by the sea a hundred years ago.

In the wider destination of Moskenes, Lofotodden National Park lies within the municipalities of Moskenes and Flakstad. Its landscape includes narrow, high mountain ridges surrounded by open sea, deep fjords and white beaches. The park aims to offer the public undisturbed nature experiences through low-impact, simple outdoor activities and with little technical infrastructure.

Lofotodden Nature Reserve in the municipality of Moskenes protects a valuable coastal area and its native plant and animal life. It is also a particularly valuable breeding ground for cormorants and various species of auk.

One cultural highlight in the wider destination of Moskenes is Kollhellaren, also known as Refsvikhula. It is Norway’s largest cave with Stone Age cave paintings, approximately 3,000 years old. Thirty-five human-like stick figures are spread across three painted panels.

From Reinebringen, you can see the village of Reine as well as wild fjords and mountains. Bunes Beach lies on the north side of Moskenes in Lofotodden National Park and is accessible only by boat. There are daily departures from Reine to Vindstad across the Reinefjord; timetables and seasonal availability may change.
