Reine combines its location between the Vestfjord and Reinefjord with the character of an authentic, active fishing village. If you are planning a stay here, you can explore different sides of the place: the chain of islands with its roads and bridges, the Lofotodden National Park Visitor Centre, and activities on foot or on the water.

A townscape shaped by fjords and fishing

Reine consists of a chain of islands connected by bridges and winding roads. High mountains rise on the Reinefjord side; the village lies between this fjord and the Vestfjord. Water, mountains and the connections between the islands all shape the townscape.

Fishing plays a particularly important role in Lofoten. Fish reception and processing are among the town’s main industries. There are also clear rules for visitors when it comes to stockfish: you may photograph it, but should not touch it.

Reine’s centre consists of small, narrow streets. Public parking is available for cars. Visitors are asked to use public campsites and not to camp elsewhere. These guidelines help you find your way around and respect local regulations.

Lofotodden National Park Visitor Centre

The visitor centre is centrally located in Reine and features an exhibition about Lofotodden National Park. The exhibition spans three rooms, focusing on the national park’s flora and fauna, its origins and current environmental issues. These include the health of the seas and marine plastic pollution.

The Moskenes tourist information office is also located in the visitor centre. There you can get information about accommodation, restaurants, tours and experiences. A virtual VR bird’s-eye view shows Lofotodden National Park from a different perspective and complements the exhibition’s themes.

The visitor centre café serves freshly baked waffles with locally made jam, as well as ice cream produced in Lofoten. The café’s offerings may change over time.

Routes and activities around Reine

The route to Reinefjord and Vinstad starts just a short walk from the visitor centre. It serves as an entrance to the national park. Alongside the exhibition, you can also make exploring the landscape on foot a focus of your stay.

The Reinebringen trail starts at Ramsviktunnelen in Reine. It climbs via Sherpa steps and includes very steep, occasionally challenging sections. For safety reasons, hiking Reinebringen in winter is explicitly not recommended. From Reinebringen, you can see Reine village as well as wild fjords and mountains.

Kayak tours also offer different perspectives on the surroundings. A guided tour goes through Reine harbour, around the nearby islands or into the entrance to Reinefjord; the exact route depends on the weather. Reine Paddling offers a three-hour guided kayaking activity on Reinefjord. This gives you a choice between a hike with views of the village, fjords and mountains, and an activity on the water.
