The municipality of Os lies in the upper Østerdalen between the regional centres of Tynset and Røros. Its territory stretches from Forollhogna in the northwest to Femunden in the southeast. When planning your trip, nature experiences and historical sites offer different points of focus: in Os, paths through mountain and summer-farm landscapes are as much a part of the picture as traces of agriculture and copper mining.

Trails and landscapes in Os

The Nørdalen nature and culture trail is 10 km long and has 31 stops. For a shorter walk, Dagsturhytta Os offers something on a different scale: the hut is on Gruvåsen in Dalsbygda and can be reached from the car park via a well-marked trail of about 1 km. These two figures refer to different routes—the walk to the hut and the entire Nørdalen trail.

At Gruvåsen in Dalsbygda, local history is brought to life through themes of agriculture and copper mining. Excavated farmsteads, mine openings and other cultural heritage sites make these themes visible on site, alongside restored stone walls and information boards. This is another way to get to know the landscape through its historical use.

Forollhogna National Park lies in the northwest of the municipality. It is a peaceful mountain area that is easy to hike, surrounded by lush summer-farm valleys and home to its own wild reindeer population. Dalsbygda is a starting point for numerous easy hikes into the valleys and mountains. Other options include cycling through the summer-farm landscape and experiencing historic hay meadows and summer-farm settings.

One specific route leads from Trøenget to Langsfjellhogna. It passes through old pasture and hay meadow landscapes up to the tree line; from the summit, there are views into Forollhogna National Park and across the valley. The upper section is not marked. Another hike leads from the summer-farm settlement of Såttåhaugen to the summit of Forollhogna. Active summer farming with animals grazing in the pastures takes place there. Follow the local guidance on parking and grazing animals on this hike.

Cultural heritage sites and historic places

Oddentunet is in Narjordet, a well-preserved, protected farmstead in its original location. The interpretation building houses an exhibition on the history of Odden and Narjordet. Oddentunet is therefore a place where you can explore the history of the farmstead alongside stories about the surrounding area.

Other cultural sites offer different points of interest: Utistuvollen is a protected 19th-century summer-farm complex along the Snudda River in Dalsbygda and a family-friendly historic outing. Kverna ved Narjordet is a restored village mill from the 1850s near Røbekken, on the way to Narbuvoll. Vinterleden, meanwhile, is a particularly important part of the World Heritage site Røros Mining Town and the Circumference in Os.

Fosskleiva on the Vangrøfta River is also an easily accessible and interesting excursion destination. Together with the farmsteads, the mill and the traces of mining, it shows the varied character of Os’s historic sites.

Winter experiences and getting there

Røros Alpinsenter Hummelfjell has a park, a children’s area, a toboggan run and a play area. The downhill runs have different levels of difficulty for a range of abilities. As operations may change, it is a good idea to check the latest information before your trip. Vintervukku is an annual winter festival week in Os, with experiences for all ages; dates and programme vary from year to year. If you plan to visit during the festival week, check the dates for your travel year.

Os is served daily by buses to and from Trondheim. For precise planning, it is a good idea to check the timetable for your travel date. Whether you want to focus your stay on hiking, cultural history or a winter programme, these highlights offer different ways to plan your time in Os.
