In Tynset, experiences range from octagonal wooden churches to traces of mining and trails through river and mountain landscapes. Cultural sites are located in Tynset, Neby and Kvikne; outdoors, hiking and pilgrimage routes lead to other points of interest. You can tailor your trip to the places and activities that interest you most.

Churches and Cultural History

Tynset Church is a wooden church with an octagonal floor plan, built in 1795. Tylldal Church, also in Tynset Municipality, has an octagonal section: its roof turret points to a more elaborate interior than its simple exterior might initially suggest. The church was consecrated in 1736. Kvikne has a wooden cruciform church dating from 1652 to 1654; it was remodeled in 1739. Its furnishings and interior date from the 18th century.

In Neby, information boards along the cultural trail tell the story of Tynset in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Tynset bygdemuseum open-air museum is also located in central Tynset. Museumssenteret Ramsmoen has exhibition spaces, archives and collection storage, as well as a library with work areas for the public. Together, these places offer different ways to explore local history: through church architecture, an open-air museum, exhibitions and collections.

Kvikne and Mining History

The history of Vollan gård farm in Kvikne dates back to the start of the mining era in the early 17th century. A private farm chapel is among its later additions. Kvikne Church also brings together several historical periods: after it was built in the mid-17th century, it was remodeled in 1739; its 18th-century furnishings and interior remain part of its story today.

The mining area of the Kvikne Copper Works lies 8–9 km from the village center and is accessible by road only in summer. This seasonal restriction is important when planning your visit. The remains include ruins, several building foundations, the walls of a wheelhouse and remnants of water-power installations. These include remains of waterways and dams from the 18th century.

Hiking Trails and Pilgrimage Route

A total of 13 roads and trails meet in Neby, on both sides of the Glåma. They include Gamle Allmannvei and Pilegrimsleden; a footbridge connects the routes. The Østerdalsleden runs from Trysil or Rena via Tynset to Trondheim. Pilgrims can get stamps for the pilgrimage route at Tylldal Church and Tynset Church, both in Tynset Municipality. This gives you different aspects of route planning to consider: the course of the pilgrimage route and the connected trails in Neby.

In Ripan Nature Reserve, numerous information boards make it easier to explore traces of the Ice Age. In Forollhogna National Park, you can hike through mountain and summer-farm valleys; the national park extends into Tynset Municipality in the north. Tynset Turlag publishes numerous suggestions for independent hikes in the surrounding area and also organizes group outings.

The route to Ruv also runs through the northern part of Tynset: it is well marked and easy to reach by car. Along the way, there are views and information about the surroundings, as well as opportunities to continue hiking or go fishing. Road and trail conditions may vary, so check them before you travel. The Glåma Valley between Telneset and Auma offers a different landscape. There, the river flows gently, dropping from 490 to 465 meters above sea level over 20 kilometers.

Cycling and Things to Do in Savalen

The signposted Seterveien Alvdal–Røros cycling route includes a section from Savalen to Grimsbu and can also be ridden in stages. This is particularly useful if you plan to do only part of the route. Route conditions and services can change; check the latest information when planning your trip.

Savalen Fjellspa offers a wellness pool with panoramic views of the surrounding area, as well as relaxing and revitalizing spa treatments. Savalen Hestesenter offers short and long horseback rides, as well as riding lessons. Check current availability if you plan to take advantage of either of these offerings.
