Trysil brings together winter sports, trails through mountain landscapes, river activities and cultural attractions. If you’re looking for a hotel in Trysil, you can start by deciding which of these themes will shape your trip and what time of year you’d like to visit. The differences between the activities can help you choose a destination that fits your own travel plans.

Skiing and cross-country skiing

Trysil has four interconnected ski areas. At SkiStar Trysil, there are 71 groomed slopes and 41 modern lifts. As operations are seasonal, it’s worth checking the latest information before your trip. The Ski Bus to and from SkiStar Trysil is free with a valid ski pass; check the current transport conditions before travelling.

Cross-country skiing is available on an equally extensive scale: a total of 500 kilometres of trails are groomed in Trysil, many of which are also suitable for skating. At Trysilfjellet, you can choose from short and long loop routes through the winter landscape. This lets you include different types of winter sports in your travel plans: a cross-country ski tour or time on the slopes and lifts. Trail grooming is seasonal.

Cycling routes and excursions at Trysilfjellet

Mountain bikers can enjoy more than 70 kilometres of adapted trails through forests and mountain landscapes in Trysil. The Trysil Bike Park offers something different: its lift-assisted mountain biking includes 20 kilometres of flow trails, technical trails and black trails. Fjellrunden, meanwhile, is a 13-kilometre cycling and hiking trail that circles the entire Trysilfjellet. The options differ in terms of trail network, lift access and loop-route character.

The fire lookout hut is just a few steps from the highest point of Trysilfjellet, marked by a cairn. The summit is 1,132 metres above sea level. The hut can be reached from the south and north sides of the mountain; conditions depend on the season and the weather. Take both into account when planning an excursion to the summit.

River activities, horse riding and fishing

A canoe trip on the Trysilelva starts at Trysil Hyttegrend & Camping, two kilometres south of the centre of Trysil. It’s suitable for families with children and for friends. An approximately four-kilometre canoe route runs between Trysil Hyttegrend and Tjønna in Nybergsund. Family rafting is offered on the southern stretch of the Trysilelva, where the water is calmer and the difficulty grades are 1–2; it’s seasonal. The highest waves are at Elgfossen, where you can try surfing the waves.

Rides with the Trysil Horse Center take you into the wilderness of Trysil, through landscapes of old forests, open areas and hidden cloudberry bogs. A stop at a bear den is planned along the way; moose sightings are possible but not guaranteed. The rides are seasonal and can be booked.

If you’d like to fish, check where your fishing licence is valid: it covers almost all lakes and waterways in Trysil municipality, as well as more than 120 rivers and lakes in the Trysil and Ljøra river systems. Check the current rules and licence coverage before fishing.

Culture and history

The cultural walk in Innbygda, the centre of Trysil, can be done independently or with a guide. Kongeparken in Nybergsund is Trysil municipality’s 1,000-year site. The park presents Trysil’s wartime history, associated with dramatic events and the bombing of Nybergsund during the Second World War.

Seasonal and cultural activities can also play a part in planning your trip. In summer, Bjønnstua, an old building in Innbygda, opens its doors and serves waffles. Concerts and poetry evenings are among the events at Trysil Vicarage, along with guided tours and ghost walks; the programme may vary.

When choosing when to visit, consider which activities you’d like to include: cross-country ski trails are groomed seasonally, family rafting is seasonal, and Bjønnstua’s open house takes place in summer. Decide whether to focus on winter sports, cycling and hiking, river activities or culture, then find a hotel in Trysil to suit your plans.
