Engerdal among mountain plateaus, lakes and forests
Accommodation in Engerdal
Mountain plateaus, lakes, rivers and forests define Engerdal. Most of its wilderness lies between 600 and 800 metres above sea level. Here, ridges and bodies of water meet in the landscape, creating a striking setting for hikes, paddling trips and other nature experiences.
Natural landscape and location
Femundsmarka National Park lies between Lake Femunden and the Swedish border, in the municipalities of Røros and Engerdal. Gutulia National Park is south of Femundsmarka, near the Swedish border, in the municipality of Engerdal. The two names therefore refer to different geographical locations: Femundsmarka lies between the lake and the border and spans two municipalities, while Gutulia lies to the south, in Engerdal.
On foot and on the water
Femundsmarka has countless kilometres of marked hiking trails. Visitors can also follow animal tracks or streams. This gives you different ways to explore: follow marked trails or discover the surroundings by following natural tracks.
On the water, a canoe or packraft are possible options. The national park offers calm lakes and meandering rivers for this. The choice is clear: would you rather walk on trails or follow tracks, or explore the lakes and rivers by watercraft? These activities offer different perspectives on the landscape without requiring you to plan a specific route.
Fishing is also part of life in Engerdal. A single fishing licence is valid for more than 900 lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, and allows fishing from the shore or a boat. The exceptions are Isteren, Ormutusjøen, Svalsjøen, the private area of Sylen, Hundsjøen and Store Hyllsjøen. Before your trip, check the current rules and the licence coverage, especially if you plan to visit one of the excluded waters.
Discover history and culture
The Blokkodden Wilderness Museum offers insights into forestry, agriculture, hunting and fishing, as well as South Sámi culture. Another focus is Engerdal’s connection with the Røros Copper Works. These topics bring economic activities together with cultural ties, giving a visit to the museum a distinct regional context.
A 1.5-kilometre universally designed boardwalk leads through the museum. It passes through birch forest, across marshland and uneven terrain, and ends at a small fishing pier on the Hyttelva. The path is also suitable for wheelchairs and prams. The forest, marsh and fishing pier are all landmarks along the route; take the varied terrain into account when planning your visit.
At the visitor centre for Femundsmarka and Gutulia National Parks in Elgå, Engerdal, the exhibition covers local history, South Sámi reindeer husbandry and wildlife. Specific exhibition details may change. The Blokkodden Wilderness Museum is open in summer; check the seasonal opening times before you arrive.
Regulated snowmobile trails
Engerdal has regulated snowmobile trails. The Engerdal Snøscooter Forening operates them, provides regular updates on their condition and sells trail passes. The applicable regulation and trail network were adopted or revised on 18 October 2023. If you plan to use the trails, you can refer to the operator’s ongoing condition reports and information about trail passes.
