Engerdal: River Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Engerdal
Engerdal sentrum lies at an altitude of about 470 meters at the bottom of a valley running from north to south. The Engeråa flows through the center, and Lake Lille Engeren borders the central areas. The river and lake thus give the town center distinct connections to the water.
River, Waterfront, and Paths in the Center
The Engeråa and its riparian zone are considered important natural features; a meandering section with natural riverbanks is classified as locally important (C). Some of the most important recreation areas in the center are along the river. These include the bathing spot at the mouth of the Engeråa, where it flows into Engeren. Baggroa is also in the center: the park has been redeveloped and is a central recreation area.
A developed footpath runs along the river west of the Engeråa, below Engerdal kirke. Another newly built footpath lies between the Engeråa and the cemetery. Each of the paths described therefore has its own connection to the river, the church, or the cemetery.
Church, Cemetery, and Art
Engerdal kirke and its cemetery are centrally located in the town center. Both are important cultural heritage sites and landscape features. The listed long church is built using log construction and was inaugurated in 1873.
The Engerdal rectory dates from 1893 and was later renovated. It is an important cultural heritage site that has received a positive assessment, as well as a landscape feature. Baggroa is home to Abakus, a sculptural installation comprising seven parts. It honors Egil A. Hylleraas’s pioneering work in quantum mechanics and in calculating the helium atom.
The Destinasjon Femund Engerdal tourist office is located in the center at Engerdal Torg. As the location of a visitor office may change, it is best to check before your trip.
The Wider Engerdal Destination
Across the wider Engerdal destination, the landscape is shaped by mountain plateaus, lakes, rivers, and forests; the wilderness lies mostly between 600 and 800 meters above sea level. Engerdal sentrum lies lower, at about 470 meters, at the bottom of the north–south valley. Femundsmarka National Park lies between Lake Femunden and the Swedish border, in the municipalities of Røros and Engerdal. To the south, Gutulia National Park lies near the Swedish border in the municipality of Engerdal.
Femundsmarka has countless kilometers of marked hiking trails; visitors can also follow animal tracks or waterways. Canoe and packraft trips are possible on its quiet lakes and meandering rivers. This part of the destination therefore offers walking trails and water-based activities as distinct options.
The Blokkodden Wilderness Museum provides information about forestry, agriculture, hunting, fishing, South Sámi culture, and Engerdal’s connection to the Røros Copper Works. A 1.5-kilometer universally designed boardwalk passes through the museum. It runs through birch forest, across bogs and uneven terrain, to a small fishing pier on the Hyttelva; the path is also suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
At the visitor center for Femundsmarka and Gutulia National Parks in Elgå, Engerdal, the exhibition covers local history, South Sámi reindeer husbandry, and wildlife. If you plan a visit, check in advance which exhibition details are current.
