Discover Hamar: Domkirkeodden, Mjøsa and winter trails
Accommodation in Hamar
Domkirkeodden is a large museum and open-air area in Hamar, with plenty of opportunities for walks. The 400-mål site contains a total of 65 historic buildings relocated here from villages around Hamar. It stretches from Rosenlundvika in the south to Martodden in the north.
Architecture and museums in Hamar
Hamar Cathedral was designed in the Romanesque style by Heinrich Ernst Schirmer, one of Norway’s leading church architects. It can accommodate 500 people. Alongside the extensive open-air area, it offers a tangible example of Romanesque architecture at the heart of the cultural offerings.
The Norwegian Railway Museum in Hamar combines modern indoor exhibitions with a large museum park. The grounds include various railway buildings and tracks. The Tertittoget has run on a fixed summer route at the museum since 1962; specific seasonal dates may vary.
Vikingskipet is Norway’s national speed skating arena. It also hosts major trade fairs, exhibitions, anniversaries and cultural events every year. If a particular event is the reason for your trip, check its dates before making plans.
Lakeside trails and the Pilgrim’s Route
Hamar’s lakeside promenade is seven kilometres long and well developed as a nature trail. It is suitable for walking, pushing a pram, running and cycling. At Domkirkeodden, the promenade follows the shore of Lake Mjøsa, making it possible to cross the entire area. This lets you combine a visit to the museum and open-air area with time by the water.
The Pilgrim’s Route offers a different perspective: it runs along Mjøsa from Stange, through Hamar and on to Ringsaker Municipality. Domkirkeodden Climbing Park is also located along the lakeside promenade, in the direction of the Norwegian Railway Museum. The lakeside route and the Pilgrim’s Route therefore differ in the extent described: the promenade passes through the area around Domkirkeodden, while the Pilgrim’s Route runs through Hamar between the places mentioned.
Nature and activities
The Åkersvika wetland offers special experiences in nature and is particularly suitable for birdwatching. Visitors interested in this natural side of Hamar will find a different focus here than at the museum buildings and exhibitions.
Ankerskogen family water park has a beach area, a paddling pool and slides. This is another distinct activity to consider when planning a trip, alongside walking trails, museums and events.
Hamar in summer and winter
The Gåsbu ski area includes a floodlit cross-country ski trail, a dog-sledding arena and the Lierberget downhill run. It is about ten kilometres from central Hamar. The Hedmarken Turistløyper trail network lets you put on your skis in Hamar sentrum and travel via Gåsbu up to the plateau. Gåsbu brings together several named winter sports facilities; the trail network describes a route from the centre, via Gåsbu, up to the plateau.
Check the seasonal dates when planning a trip around the museum train, as they may vary.
