Nesbyen: Culture, Trails and Experiences
Accommodation in Nesbyen
Nesbyen offers different options to consider when planning your trip: buildings of cultural and historical interest, a signposted town trail and a range of activities. If you’re looking for hotels in Nesbyen, you can start by deciding whether cultural history or outdoor activities should be the focus of your stay.
Cultural history in Nesbyen
Hallingdal Museum offers daily guided tours of buildings of cultural and historical interest; if needed, several tours take place each day. The museum preserves cultural history from the Middle Ages to the present day. Particular emphasis is placed on farming and industrial history in the 18th and 19th centuries. A notable historical landmark is Staveloftet: dating from 1340, it is the oldest non-church building in Hallingdal.
Gamle Nes consists mainly of buildings dating from before 1900 and forms the western part of Nesbyen town centre. There, you can use your own mobile phone to play audio stories about the buildings. Kunstvandring Nesbyen features paintings in Gamle Nes and along the Rukkedøla River. You can start at Hallingdal Museum and follow the river upstream.
Circular routes and activities
The signposted Nesbyen circular route runs for four kilometres through the town and along the river. It takes about an hour to complete. This gives you a specific time frame to consider if you’d like to include a walk around town in your plans.
During the recurring Stolpejakten in Nesbyen, you use an app or a paper map to find posts and explore the local area. The activity is free and is open to all ages and fitness levels. Eventyrjakten is also free, but is designed as a hiking experience for families with children. Six adventures are hidden in Nesbyen. The main difference between the two activities is whether you’d like to find posts using an app or map, or choose a family hiking experience.
Waterfalls and seasonal conditions
Føssan is the local name for a series of small waterfalls in the Rukkedølselva, right by the entrance to Hallingdal Museum. They are particularly impressive during the spring snowmelt in the high mountains in April and May. How dramatic the display is depends on snowmelt conditions; bear this in mind if you plan your visit around it.
Planning other activities
There is a dedicated bus for HallingSpranget that takes cyclists and their bikes from the centre of Nesbyen to the trailhead. The shuttle operates seasonally. Check the operating period before making specific plans. HallingSpranget ends in the centre of Nesbyen, so both the seasonal transfer to the trailhead and the route’s endpoint in the town centre are relevant to your plans.
The family-friendly Nesfjellet Alpin ski centre in Nesbyen has 14 runs and six lifts. For hiking, the tourist office in Nesbyen provides the “Hikes in Nesbyen” hiking map, as well as hiking suggestions and advice, free of charge. You can therefore choose your activities based on what suits you: a marked town trail, a hike or a route with a seasonal shuttle.
