Nore og Uvdal: Trails, Winter and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Nore og Uvdal
At the end of Jønndalen in Uvdal lies Solheimstulen, a staffed mountain lodge at the foot of Hardangervidda National Park. The lodge is accessible year-round by road from County Road 40: the turnoff is about 13 kilometres north of Uvdal, and from there it is another 14 kilometres to the lodge. Before setting out, check road and toll conditions as well as the lodge’s operating arrangements.
Trails for summer and winter
Marked summer trails and winter routes lead from Solheimstulen to MĂĄrbu, Rauhelleren, Ă…an and Imingfjell. These destinations provide clear directions for planning hikes; which routes are suitable also depends on the season and trail conditions. For a shorter walk, try the marked cultural trail in Fauskodammen Cultural Park. It is about 1.6 kilometres long.
Cyclists will find 17 cycling routes in the municipality of Nore og Uvdal, covering a total of 106 kilometres. The Numedalsruta is another option: this 280-kilometre cycling route runs from Geilo via Kongsberg to Larvik and passes through Uvdal. Smådøl is a clearly defined section of the route. It is 35 kilometres long and runs from Ånevatn to Rødberg. A range of route lengths and sections is available to help you plan, without implying a particular travel time.
Skiing and cross-country skiing in Uvdal
Uvdal Skisenter has 25 downhill runs, including steep slopes, a terrain park and long, gently sloping pistes. The longest run is five kilometres; the ski area has a vertical drop of 620 metres. Uvdal also has 570 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails, spread across the plateau and valley. When planning, take current operating and snow conditions into account, as grooming and trail availability depend on snow and maintenance.
Churches and history in Numedal
Nore stave church is a cross-shaped church of the Numedal type, built around 1167. In Kirkebygda, Uvdal stave church stands beside the Nore og Uvdal Bygdetun open-air museum. The museum was established on the grounds of an old vicarage. The schoolhouse and Prestegardsburet are the surviving buildings from the former vicarage. The church and the preserved vicarage buildings thus stand side by side at this site, while Nore stave church provides a separate historical landmark.
Archaeological features are also part of the region’s cultural heritage. The Vasstulan hunting site consists of 21 stone-lined trapping pits, arranged in a system on a raised moraine ridge. The Frygne burial ground has about 30 stone mounds. Eighteen are interpreted as burial mounds; one is elongated and the rest are round.
At Nore og Uvdal Bygdetun, visitors can take part in activities such as haymaking from 1 June to 31 August. Waffles, coffee and Kling—a traditional local dish—are also sold there. These offerings may be seasonal. A visit can therefore combine local history with a specific seasonal programme and regional food.
Animals and activities at Langedrag Nature Park
At Langedrag Nature Park, visitors can get close to wolves, lynxes, Arctic foxes, wild boar, moose and reindeer. The nature park welcomes overnight guests and day visitors year-round. Activities include riding camps, a climbing park, dog and outdoor camps, animal and outdoor camps, family camps, and camps for grandparents and grandchildren. As the programme may change, check the current activity calendar before travelling.
For trips involving fishing, the opportunities in Uvdalselva are also relevant: fishing is possible between Fønnebøfjorden and the confluence of the Tøddøla and Jønndøla rivers. Check fishing access and licence requirements in advance. Whether you focus on cycling routes, winter activities, cultural sites or nature experiences, the activities described offer different starting points for planning your stay and looking for a hotel.
