Nes combines gorge landscapes, forests and marshes with distinctive river geography and numerous traces of cultural history. In between are marked trails, museums and historic sites that appeal to a range of interests.

River Landscapes and Protected Nature

In the lower-lying areas of Nes, below the marine limit, clay deposits have formed a distinctive gorge landscape. The Glomma and Vorma rivers cut through this area. The Nes Church ruins are also closely connected to the river landscape: they stand on the peninsula where the Glomma and Vorma meet.

The Veset and Holter Nature Reserve covers 219 decares. It was designated on December 12, 2025, to protect threatened nature and safeguard biodiversity. For the residents of Nes, the area is being preserved as a quiet, nature-rich place for walks and outdoor recreation. In Nes, both the distinctive landforms and the protection of nature are therefore in focus.

Museums and Historic Sites

In Vormsund, Stein skole is a school museum. Well-known Norwegian artists decorated it in the 1930s. During the summer season, the museum offers guided tours at 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on every day it is open. If you are planning a guided tour, schedule your visit around these seasonal opening times and the stated hours.

The Funnefoss Industrial Workers’ Museum is located by the Glomma in Opakermoen. Tours take visitors through the small workers’ homes on the farm. The museum also tells the story of the paper mill: it employed 80 workers and was the first large industrial enterprise in the municipality of Nes. The site thus connects the history of homes and work, while telling each in its own way.

Auli Mill also spans several periods: it was built in 1909, while milling at this site dates back to the 17th century. Gamle Hvam Museum is an authentic historic farm complex in Nes, with buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Together, these places offer different ways to explore Nes’s architectural and industrial history.

Walking Trails, Views and Swimming Spots

The Sagstuen nature trail is a marked loop with 40 information boards. They cover forestry as well as plant and animal life. At the forest lake Fløyta, a signposted and marked trail runs along the lake to its northern end, where there are good swimming spots. Another trail leads from Udnes School to Hvamsetertjern, where there are also good swimming spots.

Vardehøgda is a destination in its own right for views. It is one of the highest points in Nes, and a 13-meter-high observation tower stands on it, offering views across half of eastern Norway. A signposted and marked trail leads to Vardehøgda and passes Dalsjøhytta and Dalsjøen. Another hike starts across the road from Seterstøa Station. It has an elevation gain of 130 meters, and from the top you can enjoy views of Funnefoss and the Glomma.

From Hvamsetra, you can continue the hike to Røverskansen. There you will find the remains of an old fortification dating from between 400 and 600. The trail thus combines a hike with a historic destination. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they may vary.

Cultural Trails by Bike or on Foot

KulTour is a cycling tour in Nes that visits selected cultural heritage sites in Vormadalen. It starts at the Nes Church ruins; a signposted cycle route leads through the forest and past the golf course. The Cultural Heritage Trail in Vormadalen runs through a cultural landscape of national importance. Information boards tell the story of some of the cultural heritage sites, and you can choose your own starting point. As route information and signposting may be updated, it is worth checking the latest information before setting off.

Whether you are looking for a hotel for a stay focused on cultural visits, trails or river landscapes, Nes offers a range of themes to explore. The specific guided-tour times at Stein skole, the stated trail features and the historic sites can help you plan your trip around your interests.
