When looking for a hotel in Rollag, your planned activities are a good place to start: cross-country and downhill skiing, hiking and cycling, or sites of cultural and historical interest can shape different travel plans. Winter sports trails take center stage at Vegglifjell; in Rollag and Veggli, you’ll also find marked routes, historic buildings and activities tied to specific seasons.

Winter sports at Vegglifjell

Vegglifjell has around 100 kilometers of groomed ski trails. They wind through open forests and mountain landscapes, reaching into the high mountains. The latest trail status is published separately; check it before setting out. For downhill skiing, Vegglifjell Ski Center has a T-bar lift and two groomed runs. The lift was described as new in 2019, and operating conditions may vary by season.

Lauvhovd ski stadium also offers trails of different lengths: a floodlit 600-meter loop and a one-kilometer sprint course. The facility was completed in 2022. This makes it easy to distinguish between the longer trails at Vegglifjell and the designated routes at the ski stadium by type and length.

The Trillemarka-Rollagsfjell Nature Reserve lies partly within Rollag municipality, covers 158 square kilometers and is one of Norway’s largest nature reserves. It offers nature-friendly recreational opportunities all year round. The area has old seter trails and a network of ski trails that runs through the reserve in winter. Trail maintenance and grooming vary by location.

Hiking and cycling

Vegglifjell and Rollag have a network of marked trails, including mountain hikes of varying difficulty. The marked trail to Geiteskallen passes over Geiterova and Geiteryggen to the highest point, with views in every direction. The Nordmannsslepa also passes through Veggli as a historic hiking route.

The cycling route along the Numedalslågen in Rollag is considered quiet, easy and family-friendly. The scenery, wildlife and cultural heritage sites change along the way; notable stops include Rollag Bygdetun and Rollag Stave Church. If you’re comparing routes by length, “Rollag rundt” is 19.5 kilometers long. “Kjerre og Langåsen rundt” is 21 kilometers long and starts at Veggli Vertshus. Trail conditions may vary, and the description of the second route may be revised. Check the latest route information before setting out.

The “Trillemarka rundt” cycling route passes through the nature reserve along routes where cycling is permitted; restrictions apply to e-bikes in the reserve. Another route, the “Heimseterrunden,” starts and ends at Veggli Fjellstue and offers several viewpoints along the way. Trail conditions here may also vary.

Draisine rides on the Numedalsbanen start at Veggli station; the dresines are rented from Veggli Vertshus. As availability may change, check the latest information before making plans. The railway line from Rollag to Rødberg is protected as a heritage site.

Building history and local life

Rollag Bygdetun consists of 14 buildings brought together from various farms in Rollag. Its exhibitions feature more than 1,000 objects that show everyday life in the area. The open-air museum is located by Rollag Stave Church and the vicarage. During the summer season, the café at Bygdetun serves waffles and ice cream.

Rollag Vicarage is considered Norway’s oldest surviving vicarage; its buildings include a residence dating from the 17th century. Alstadloftet is the oldest house in Rollag and dates from the Middle Ages. Søre Tråen consists of four protected buildings. Austsidevegen, County Road 2792 through Rollag, is also a good place to see traditional architecture.

Every year during Middelalderuka, a pilgrimage hike takes place between Rollag Stave Church and Veggli Church. Vegglidagen is held each August as a family day at Veggli Activity Park; the program includes activities, market stalls and entertainment. The exact program may change, so it’s a good idea to check the dates before visiting. Throughout the year, Rollag and Veggli IL set up a total of 30 orienteering markers across three areas: northern and southern Vegglifjell, and the area around Rollag Stave Church. Dates and marker locations may vary.

For reference: Veggli is on County Road 40, near where the Nørdsteåa flows into the Numedalslågen.
