Klokkarstua brings together hiking destinations at Knivsfjellet, local architecture and history, and culture at Kulturhuset Hovtun. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the different options: the trail to Himmelvann offers opportunities for circular routes, while another hike is challenging and designed as a one-way route. The church, linden avenue and Hovtun represent different aspects of the local history and cultural scene.

Hiking at Knivsfjellet

The Knivsfjellet trail leads to Himmelvann, where several circular routes are possible. The hike starts at Hovenga samfunnshus on Knivsfjellveien in Klokkarstua. So Hovenga samfunnshus is the starting point, while Himmelvann is the destination; from there, you can choose between several circular routes. During the hike, you can enjoy views over the Drammensfjord in both directions. Trail conditions can vary, so take this into account when planning.

A different type of hike is Stage 2 of the “Asker langs kysten” route: this challenging, one-way hike covers 19.9 kilometres from Klokkarstua to Holmsbu. At Knivsfjellet, several circular routes starting from Himmelvann are available; Stage 2, by contrast, is a long route with a fixed endpoint. Before deciding, check that the length and difficulty rating of this challenging stage suit your hiking plans.

Church, chapel and linden avenue

The medieval Hurum Church in Klokkarstua is a 12th-century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its designation as a church dedicated to Mary refers to its dedication; together with its age, this provides two specific points of reference for understanding the building. The Huitfeldt Chapel is located at the church and houses one of the largest and oldest collections of coffins in the Nordic region. This means there is a distinct collection of historical significance in the immediate vicinity of the church.

You can find another historical detail in Prestegårdsalleen: 53 linden trees stand there in Klokkarstua, planted more than 100 years ago. Alongside the 12th-century building, the avenue represents a more recent layer of local history. The number of trees and when they were planted give this green feature a specific historical context, making it possible to compare the historic church with a later history of landscaping and planting.

Culture at Hovtun and practical information

Kulturhuset Hovtun is located in the former municipal hall and houses, among other things, a café and a general store. The former municipal hall offers a different historical connection from Hurum Church and the avenue; Hovtun is also a venue for cultural activities in the area. The Buena Vista film club screens films there on Friday or Saturday evenings. If you would like to include a film night in your travel plans, check the current programme beforehand, as screening dates may change. Café opening hours may also change, so check whether the café is open before you visit.

There is parking for the coastal route at Huringen Stadium in Klokkarstua. Check the current parking situation before travelling, as parking regulations may change.
