Hurum brings together coastal scenery, nature and cultural history as distinct travel interests. In Tofte, the coastal path, the Sandbukta-Østnestangen Nature Reserve and preserved traces of industrial history are highlights; in Filtvet, Filtvet Fyr lighthouse and its summer exhibitions offer a different focus. When looking for a hotel, it is worth considering your planned visits and their seasonal conditions.

Nature and Wildlife

The islands in the Sandbukta-Østnestangen Nature Reserve are known for their abundant plant and bird life. In the protected area near Østnestangen and Sandbukta, you can hike through deciduous forests. A visit to nature here focuses on both the landscape and its plants and birds. The skerries near Tofte are also home to diverse wildlife, including numerous seabirds and seals. Which animals you see depends on the season; sightings are not guaranteed. If wildlife watching is important to your trip, plan for it as a possibility rather than a definite outcome.

The Coastal Path to Rødtangen

The coastal path from Tofte to Rødtangen runs through the nature reserve and starts at Sagene boat harbor in Tofte. Camping is possible along the way. Check trail conditions and camping rules before setting out; this will let you plan the trip with or without a tent, without assuming that an overnight stay along the way is a given.

Industrial History in Tofte

Several well-preserved buildings illustrate the town’s industrial history. The “brick farm” on Skogveien was built around 1910 and consists of a street lined with low brick houses. This row of houses may bring to mind an English village street. It gives the area’s industrial history a tangible architectural dimension beyond a single date.

The polar ship Maud is part of the area’s maritime and polar history. It was built for scientist and polar explorer Roald Amundsen. The ship is displayed in the harbor south of Tofte until a museum is built. Its location and visiting arrangements may change. If you want to include the ship in your plans, check the visiting conditions in advance.

Filtvet Fyr and Getting There

In Filtvet, the Filtvet Fyr lighthouse is now a coastal art gallery. Rotating exhibitions are held there during the summer, so the exhibition program is seasonal. If an exhibition is a deciding factor for you, check the dates for your travel period. Filtvet can be reached by car or bicycle, as well as by the B21 summer boat. The boat operates seasonally, so check the current timetable before traveling on the B21. When planning your trip, the choice of transport is therefore just as relevant as the destination.

Travel Season and Things to Do

Your travel dates raise different considerations: in Filtvet, the changing exhibitions are specifically held in summer, and the B21 is also a summer boat. Wildlife watching in the skerries, by contrast, varies with the season, and sightings are never certain. Cultural events, transport and wildlife watching each have their own seasonal considerations.
