Holmsbu: Art, Harbor and Coastal Trails
Accommodation in Holmsbu
Holmsbu appeals to travelers who choose where to stay for its art, coastal scenery and maritime history. The historic layout of the village has been preserved, with many old buildings, small white houses and facilities. They are reminders that Holmsbu was first a loading place for the timber trade and a fishing village, and later became a tourist destination.
Art and Local History
The collection at the Holmsbu Art Museum consists primarily of works by the three Holmsbu painters Henrik Sørensen, Thorvald Erichsen and Oluf Wold-Torne. The museum building is protected as a heritage site by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren). Holmsbu Church also combines history and art: it is an artists’ church, was consecrated in 1887, and is known for its artistic decoration by the artist H. Sørensen.
The Kystsamlingen in Holmsbu offers a different perspective on the village. It displays objects related to the coast and fishing, as well as old boat engines and boats. Holmsbu Billedgalleri has won awards for its distinctive architecture and is protected as a heritage site. In Holmsbu, works of art, church decoration, architecture and objects from coastal and fishing history are all found side by side.
Harbor and Village Life
Holmsbu Harbor is located at the mouth of the Drammensfjord and has 250 permanent berths and 50 visitor berths. It has been a center of seafaring and trade since the early 18th century. The guest harbor has a service building with showers and toilets, including a facility that meets HC standards. The harbor information thus combines a long maritime history with practical facilities for visitors to the harbor.
A walk through the center takes you past small shops, galleries and cafés. Free parking is available at Kjøia below the church, with paid parking in the center and additional parking at Støa. Practical parking information may change; check it before your trip. Støa is a recreational area by the water. In summer, its small red houses host art exhibitions and sell handicrafts. This seasonal offering may vary from year to year.
Trails, Coast and Holtnesdalen
Several hiking trails run along the Oslofjord coast. A circular trail leads to the Holmsbu Art Museum in Støa and returns through Holtnesdalen. Check trail conditions before your hike, as they may change. Nearby Holtnesdalen comes alive in April and May, with areas covered in wood anemones and plenty of birdsong. The landscape also includes a deep, lush ravine, tall rugged cliffs, narrow paths and wild rainforest. Vegetation and trail conditions vary seasonally.
Holmsbu has several beaches and bathing spots. An annual rowing regatta for Holmsbu prams ends at the old steamboat pier. Cycling is another way to experience the area’s coastal character: a popular cycling route follows coastal roads from Holmsbu through Hurumlandet. The Holmsbu Tourist Office provides information about hiking opportunities and offers the family-friendly “Småtråkk” route. Along this route, you can use a mobile phone and QR codes to listen to stories about the places you visit.
