Asker between the Fjord Coast and Cultural History
Accommodation in Asker
Asker’s distinctive features include its fjord coastline, historic cultural sites and paths through woodland and lake scenery. Each area has a different focus: Konglungen combines island history with coastal paths, Vollen with its museum and waterfront offerings, while cycling routes around the lake are available at Semsvannet. This lets you plan your stay around the themes that interest you most.
Coastal Paths and Cycling Routes
The coastal path runs right past the Oslofjord Museum; there are sandy beaches in Vollen and at Sjøstrand. On Konglungen, the coastal path runs between Løkenes farm and the beach through a protected woodland area with pleasant walking trails. The coast and the forest offer different experiences along the routes.
The cycling options described also vary: the Vollen–Blakstad–Konglungen–Esvika cycling route follows Asker Kyststien through forests, fields and residential areas to Konglungen. In the Semsvannet recreation area, cycling routes circle the lake. Semsvannet is a popular Sunday outing among Asker residents, set in a cultural-historical landscape suitable for everyone.
Cultural History by the Fjord
On Konglungen stands Strandsitterhuset, the island’s oldest building. It was built around 1820. Sem Sagbruk offers a different glimpse of industrial history: the sawmill began operating in 1612 and is a living piece of industrial heritage owned by the Asker Museum. The museum also includes the artists’ homes of Tilla and Otto Valstad, and Hulda and Arne Garborg.
In Vollen, the Oslofjord Museum focuses on historic recreational boats, marine pollution and the construction of the polar ship Maud. There is also a hands-on activity for visitors: children can build boats powered by rubber bands and test them in an indoor pool.
Museums, Waterfronts and Local Cuisine
Vollen has more than 25 shops, galleries, restaurants and cafés. Along the waterfront, offerings include Greek lunches, wood-fired oven pizza, sushi and fresh pastries. This makes it easy to combine a visit to the coast with a taste of the area’s diverse food options.
At the NaKuHel Centre, Smia Café serves homemade food made with seasonal ingredients. NaKuHel also runs courses in the Bryggerhuset next to Tveiter Gård, including courses on making traditional flatbread. The café and baking courses offer different ways to include local cuisine and traditions in your travel plans.
Getting Around the Centre
Asker Cultural Centre is a five-minute walk from Asker railway station. Train and bus services connect the station with Oslo and Drammen. If you plan to use these connections for your trip, check the relevant timetables in advance.
Asker offers a range of options for choosing the focus of your stay: coastal paths and beaches, museum and industrial history, cycling at Semsvannet, and food and shops in Vollen. Consider which of these themes matter most to you when planning your hotel stay.
