If you are planning a stay on Nesøya, you can get to know the area from two distinct perspectives: the nature around Nesøytjern and the island’s local architecture and history. If you are looking for hotels on Nesøya, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

Nesøytjern: Forest, Marsh and Limestone Lake

Nesøytjern is on Nesøya in the Asker archipelago. The nature reserve includes a limestone lake, nutrient-rich fens and relatively intact lowland forests. Its diverse forest types include deciduous forest, limestone forest and spruce-limestone forest with low-growing ground vegetation. North of Nesøytjern, the reserve also contains a strip of limestone linden forest about 500 metres long, which is of national importance. The lake, marsh areas and different forest types give the area a variety of natural features.

The nature reserve has a network of roads and trails. If you plan to explore the area, check the current condition of the routes before setting out. This will help you plan your visit around conditions on site, without assuming a particular route or trail condition.

Herrodd and the History of the Island

Another point of interest is Herrodd, the home designed by architect Magnus Poulsson for his own family. The house is considered a major work in the Norwegian architectural history of its time. The preservation order also protects the garden and the grounds immediately surrounding the building. Here, the architecture and protected setting are closely connected: Herrodd is noteworthy not only as an architect’s home, but also in the context of its protected garden and grounds.

Nesøya gård offers another perspective on the island’s earlier history. The estate was once an aristocratic manor and the main property of the Nesøy estate. Its historical role differs from that of Herrodd: while Herrodd is associated with Magnus Poulsson, Nesøya gård represents the island’s earlier estate history.

Beaches and a Tour Around Nesøya

Hvamodden, a small sandy beach, lies at the outer end of Nesøya. It has a large lawn with play equipment and a sandbox for children, as well as benches and tables; the listed facilities also include a jetty and bathing ladder. As individual facilities may change, it is advisable to check what is available before your visit.

Hestesund is also a small sandy beach, whose character is shaped primarily by its use by local residents. If you compare the two beaches, Hvamodden is characterised by the facilities mentioned above, while Hestesund is described mainly as a local beach.

An announcement dated 28 April 2026 listed Nesøya Rundt as a family event for the 62nd time. The route was given as approximately 3 to 4 km and described in the announcement as suitable for all generations. The announcement listed a pram, kick scooter, bicycle or walking as ways to take part. The circular route therefore offers a specific distance to help you plan, while the nature reserve’s trail network provides a different setting for exploring.

Asker as the Wider Context

The wider destination of Asker offers additional cultural attractions. Sem Sagbruk began operating in 1612 and is a living example of industrial heritage owned by the Asker Museum. In Vollen, Asker, the Oslofjord Museum displays historic leisure boats and covers topics including marine pollution and the construction of the polar ship Maud. The Asker Museum also includes the artists’ homes of Tilla and Otto Valstad, and Hulda and Arne Garborg. These examples relate to Asker as the wider destination.
