Šavnik: Nature Park, Waterfalls and Historic Sites
Accommodation in Šavnik
Dragišnica and Komarnica Nature Park lies in the far northwest of the Municipality of Šavnik and covers 2,994 hectares. Within the park is the Dragišnica forest complex on the southern slopes of Durmitor. Landscapes visitors can explore here include mountain scenery, canyon valleys and gorges.
Waterfalls and Gorges
Skakavica is a seasonal waterfall about 80 metres high, which becomes active during snowmelt and heavy rain. The route there passes through an appealing natural landscape and is suitable for leisurely walks and photography.
The Komarnica River is a destination for nature lovers, hikers, anglers and photographers; it is also rich in brown trout and grayling. Grabovica Gorge is about one kilometre long and offers a varied route through waterfalls and natural pools.
Nevidio Gorge offers a different experience: narrow passages, high rock walls, clear water and natural pools make it a destination for adventure tourism. The gorge was first traversed in its entirety in 1965, after remaining unknown and impassable to people for a long time. The leisurely walks to the seasonal waterfall and the gorge landscapes, each with their own distinctive features, offer different ways to experience nature.
Hiking and Cycling
The hiking options in Šavnik include more than 20 mountain and hiking trails; this number may change as routes are added or removed. In the nature park, the range extends from easy-access walking paths to mountain climbs at elevations of nearly 2,000 metres. The trails connect villages, plateaus, canyon rims and high peaks.
A marked mountain trail leads to Boljske Grede. It is strenuous and technically challenging, and is suitable only for physically fit, well-prepared visitors. Boljske Grede is a destination for hikers and climbers; from the rocks, panoramic views open up over the deep Komarnica Gorge, the surrounding mountain peaks and dense forest landscapes.
Cycling also has its place in the nature park: mountain roads, forest trails and plateaus between gorges and mountain ranges offer good conditions for recreational and mountain biking. There are technically challenging sections near Komarnica Gorge and at higher elevations. Hiking and cycling each bring different landscapes and levels of difficulty to the fore.
Monasteries and Medieval Monuments
Podmalinsko Monastery was built around 1252 on the right bank of the Bukovica River. It is one of the most significant examples of sacred architecture in the Municipality of Šavnik. In the village of Bijela, the Monastery of St. George was built in the 11th century on the river of the same name. Near Pošćenje is an important necropolis of stećci, medieval tombstones. Together, these places illustrate different aspects of the municipality’s religious and medieval history.
A Place for Montenegrin Cuisine
In the village of Petnjica, Gnijezdo restaurant serves Montenegrin home-style specialities, as well as grilled dishes and international cuisine. The menu may change.
