Donje Stravče: Trails and Mountain Scenery
Accommodation in Donje Stravče
Donje Stravče is a gentle mountain village with numerous meadows and cultivated fields. A road climbs from the village towards a pass and a viewpoint on the edge of the Jelova glava gorge. For planning your trip, the routes described differ mainly in length, navigation, and terrain.
Hiking trails to Orline and Brskut
The 14-kilometre excursion between Donje Stravče and Orline starts at the Lazović houses at an elevation of 1,149 metres and passes through Krušev do at 1,007 metres on the way to Orline. The Orline excursion also includes the Priboj viewpoint near Milačići. From there, hikers can look into the Mala Rijeka gorge before continuing along the trail to Donje Stravče.
A trip report dated 9 May 2021 describes the Orline route as unmarked, but notes that old village paths are still visible. Near the summit, it describes a difficult rocky section with sloping rocks and fissures formed by erosion after a fire. This account is a terrain note from 2021, not a current assessment of conditions. Check trail and terrain conditions before setting out.
Another route leaves Donje Stravče on a rural dirt road towards Brskut, passing through Milačići and Dubaja. Road surfaces on this route may change, so check conditions in advance.
A circular route with different planning details
Another option is an easy circular trail that includes Donje Stravče. It is approximately 12.5 kilometres long, involves around 300 metres of ascent, and takes about six hours. A shorter option omits Jelova glava.
The descriptions answer different questions: the Orline excursion focuses on the route, navigation, and rocky section, while the circular route also includes an approximate duration and a shorter option. This lets you assess the options based on the trail features specified for each, rather than comparing only the distances.
Mountain scenery and regional destinations
One described trail offers views towards Treskavac and the peaks of Šila. Whether the peaks are visible depends on the weather. The meadows and cultivated fields also shape the character of this gentle mountain village; the road to the pass and the viewpoint at the Jelova glava gorge offers another view of the landscape.
Nearby, Rikavačko jezero lies in Gornje Stravče, in the transition zone between Žijovo and Prokletije. A gravel road connects Korita with the Veruša Valley; its passability can vary depending on the season. Bukumirsko jezero is also nearby, below Žijovo at an elevation of 1,443 metres. The glacial lake is surrounded by grassy, hilly terrain. These landscape descriptions offer different points of reference if you are considering other destinations in the mountain region in addition to the trails near Donje Stravče.
Travel time and a cultural event
Allow approximately one hour and 15 minutes for the journey from Podgorica via Kuči. Actual travel time may vary depending on road conditions. A folk gathering is held nearby each year at the Orthodox Church of Saint Elijah on Ilindan, 2 August. Check local dates and arrangements before your trip.
