The viewpoint, St. Toma Church, and traces of the former railway offer different points of interest. Traditional architectural styles and local food round out the picture. If you are looking for hotels in Limljani, you can consider whether to include the place in your travel plans mainly for its landscapes, history, or regional culture.

Landscape and Routes

From the Limljani viewpoint, you can see across the Crmnica Field and the mountain ranges around the municipality of Bar. The panoramic route “Between Two Magical Shores” offers a broader perspective: it connects the Adriatic coast with Lake Skadar and passes through Limljani. The village is considered an important stop along this route. The viewpoint and the route thus offer different perspectives: the viewpoint provides a specific panorama, while the route describes the connection between the coast and the lake.

Another route option is the Virpazar–Limljani–Boljevići–Virpazar loop. It covers 20 km and 375 m of elevation gain. Unlike the panoramic route, whose description emphasizes the connection between the coast and the lake, the cycling loop specifies its distance and elevation gain. Conditions on the ground may vary; take this into account when planning your day.

Church, Railway, and Architecture

St. Toma Church is associated with an unusual historical event: during the 1896 earthquake, it slid almost 100 meters and remained undamaged. It is considered a tourist attraction and is connected to the Cultural Heritage Panoramic Route.

The former railway also shapes the history of the village. The former station building still stands in Limljani, on the old railway line between Bar and Virpazar. This was the first railway built by the state of Montenegro. The Ćiro also passed through Limljani until 1959. The church and the railway thus represent different historical stories: at St. Toma, the earthquake episode stands out, while the railway recalls the village’s former transport history.

Traditional architecture in Limljani includes stone houses with vaulted features, threshing floors, dry-stone walls, and terraces on the slopes. These features extend beyond individual houses to include the structures and forms that shape the village’s appearance on the hillsides.

Local Cuisine and Viticulture

Local foods include cheese with mountain herbs, homemade prosciutto, olives, dried and fresh figs, pomegranates, mandarins, and walnuts. One winery associated with Limljani is Klisić. For travelers interested in regional cuisine, this offers a different focus from the church and railway.

The Wider Area: Bar

The Bar area lies between the Adriatic coast and Lake Skadar. In Skadar Lake National Park, licensed operators organize boat trips; boats depart, among other places, from Virpazar. Visitors can explore the park’s nine marked hiking trails independently using a map. Maps are available at the visitor centers in Virpazar and Vranjina. The park also has five cycling trails and two mountain-bike routes; the cycling trails start, among other places, in Virpazar. Birdwatching on Lake Skadar can be arranged from a boat or from the Stanaj observation tower, with a reservation at least one day in advance.
