Bar: Cultural Heritage, Old Town and Coast
Accommodation in Bar
Bar combines historic sites and buildings with the coast, markets and activities on the Adriatic and at Lake Skadar. When choosing your destination, you can consider Bar’s cultural attractions in Bar and Stari Bar, as well as nature and leisure opportunities across the wider Bar destination.
Cultural Heritage in Bar and Stari Bar
The Zavičajni Museum Bar is housed in King Nikola’s summer residence, built in 1885. The building is located in Topolica, on the seafront promenade. The King Nikola Castle complex is protected as immovable cultural heritage in Category II. It comprises a small palace, a court chapel and a winter garden, as well as a park with rare trees and exotic Mediterranean vegetation. A gallery hosts solo and group exhibitions by contemporary academic visual artists.
More than 260 former buildings have survived in the Old Town of Bar. The Stari Bar fortress is divided into the Lower Town, Middle Town and Upper Town. Visitors can walk among the ruins and see restored palaces, churches, an aqueduct and a Turkish bath. These sites show different aspects of the cultural heritage: the castle complex with its buildings and park, and the layered fortress and numerous remains in the old town center.
Coast, Marina and Activities
Mountain ranges, warm seawater and city panoramas are characteristic of Bar. A city beach is located near the port. Marina Bar lies at the entrance to the Adriatic and has 660 berths for vessels up to 45 meters long. Confirm the stated capacity before booking. The marina’s services include engine maintenance, engine repairs and vessel cleaning; you should confirm their availability directly before arrival.
Bar offers access to experiences on the Adriatic and at Lake Skadar. These include boat trips on Lake Skadar, the 115-kilometer panoramic route “Between Two Magical Shores” with seven viewpoints, visits to Old Bar and the Old Olive Tree in Mirovica, as well as diving and sailing. The nearby Old Olive Tree is a protected natural monument. It is estimated to be more than 2,200 years old; it belongs to the žutica variety and produces olive oil.
Lake Skadar in the Wider Bar Destination
The wider Bar destination encompasses the area between the Adriatic coast and Lake Skadar. Licensed providers offer boat trips on the lake, with departures including from Virpazar. The national park has nine marked hiking trails that visitors can follow independently with a map. Maps are available at the visitor centers in Virpazar and Vranjina. There are also five cycling routes and two mountain biking trails; cycling routes start in Virpazar, among other places.
Birdwatching at Lake Skadar is another option in the wider Bar destination. It can be arranged from a boat or from the Stanaj observation tower, provided you register at least one day in advance. Other regional points of interest include Besac Fortress, on a hill above Virpazar overlooking the lake, and Starčevo Monastery, on an island in Lake Skadar. Murićka Beach has visitor facilities and restaurants serving food from the Lake Skadar area.
Markets and Regional Cuisine
Bar has two markets: an older one in the city center and a newer Bar market near the bus station. The stalls sell homemade olive oil, olives, mandarins, pomegranates and dried figs. The selection is seasonal and may change; the markets’ locations and layout may also change over time. Barsko zlato is an olive oil brand associated with Bar, and žutica is an indigenous olive variety associated with Bar. Local cuisine also includes fish and wines from Crmnica and the Skadar Basin.
