Jūrkalne combines a striking coastal landscape with the cultural heritage of the Suiti. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are most interested in the cliffs, trails and outdoor activities, or churches, exhibitions and culinary traditions. Places in the surrounding area and in Jūrkalnes pagasts also offer a variety of points of interest.

Cliffs and the Nature and Recreation Park

The Jūrkalne cliff reaches heights of up to 20 metres above sea level in places and has a sandy beach. Jūrkalne Nature and Recreation Park includes Ugunspļava. The park has an observation platform, benches and a staircase on the cliff. As visitor facilities may change, briefly check that they are currently accessible before your visit.

Vējturu nams, a nature concert hall, is located within the park grounds. It can be used by the municipality, the public and businesses for public and private events. If you are travelling for an event, confirm the arrangements in advance.

Suiti culture and local history

The Suiti cultural region connects Alsunga, Basi, Gudenieki and Jūrkalne. Jūrkalnes Sv. Jāzepa Roman Catholic Church is one of three historic Suiti churches and part of this cultural region, which has been included on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. The cultural story therefore extends beyond a single building: it encompasses several places and a distinct regional tradition.

The Vētru Museum tells the stories of people who fell victim to storms on the Baltic Sea, as well as antiquities found on the beach and recovered from the depths of the sea. A volume of “Maģie Suiti,” Jūrkalne’s first and only newspaper, is on display at Jūrkalne Library. Jūrkalne Tautas nams is housed in a former inn built in the mid-18th century.

The ethnographic ensemble “Maģie suiti” is dedicated to preserving and promoting Suiti traditions. At its Suitošanas masterclass, it offers traditional dishes such as žograuši, spēkrauši, vētras rauši and milk fish soup; booking in advance is recommended. Another taste of the local cuisine can be found near Jūrkalne: Bērziņi farm offers wheat and rye bread made using old family recipes. If you would like to bake your own, you can prepare loaves there by prior arrangement.

Nature trails and activities in Jūrkalnes pagasts

The “Rīvas loki” nature trail begins in Jūrkalnes pagasts at Ulmale–Labraga Lutheran Church. Along the way, there are views of river bends and steep riverbank exposures. Boating takes place on the Rīva in spring and autumn. This is a seasonal difference from tandem paragliding, which is offered in Jūrkalnes pagasts year-round. Ask the operator in advance about current arrangements.

People in Jūrkalne also enjoy windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboarding. Nearby, the “Cerību bura” monument marks a place from which some of Latvia’s population fled to Sweden between autumn 1944 and spring 1945. The Rīva wooden bridge is another nearby attraction: it includes a waterfall and Latvia’s first natural fish pass.

You can choose different focuses for your trip: the cliffs and sandy beach shape the landscape, while the church, museum and Suiti traditions provide a cultural point of interest. In Jūrkalnes pagasts, there is also a nature trail and seasonal boating; other activities have their own requirements, such as booking in advance for bread-making or confirming event arrangements.
