Riga Between Art Nouveau and Historic Cityscapes
Accommodation in Riga
Riga is a destination for visitors who want to include Art Nouveau, historic urban forms, and significant cultural sites in their trip. Different urban influences meet in the historic centre; at the same time, the Freedom Monument, the cathedral, the opera house, and the Central Market each offer a different focus. This variety helps you choose what to centre your stay around.
Historic Cityscapes and Art Nouveau
The historic centre comprises three distinct cityscapes. These include a medieval core and a semicircular boulevard ring from the 19th century. A green belt runs along both sides of the city canal. There are also former suburban districts with a rectangular street grid and wooden architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries. Riga’s historic character can therefore be understood through more than individual buildings: street patterns and building styles give each area its own character.
Art Nouveau is not confined to a single street either. There are around 50 particularly valuable Art Nouveau buildings in the medieval part of the historic centre, and more than 300 in the rest of the historic centre. The larger collection is therefore outside the medieval part. Alberta iela is considered the centre of Riga’s Art Nouveau, lined along its entire length with magnificent historic Art Nouveau buildings. Riga thus offers both a clearly identified street with Art Nouveau architecture and a much broader collection across the historic centre.
Landmarks with History and Views
The Freedom Monument symbolises Latvian statehood, national unity, independence, and freedom. It was unveiled on 18 November 1935. Its significance extends beyond its role as a striking structure: it also represents key themes in Latvian history. Riga Cathedral offers a different focus. It is the largest and one of the oldest medieval religious buildings in Latvia and the Baltic states.
The tower of St Peter’s Church offers a panoramic view. From there, you can see the red roofs of the Old Town, modern Riga, the Gulf of Riga, and the Daugava with its extensive port. The landmarks therefore differ not only in their architecture, but also in what they represent: the Freedom Monument stands for national significance, the cathedral for medieval religious architecture, and the church tower for views across the city, gulf, and river landscape.
Opera, Performances, and a Boat Trip
The Latvian National Opera and the Latvian National Ballet offer guided tours of the unique 19th-century architectural monument. Around 200 performances take place each season at the Latvian National Opera and the Latvian National Ballet. If you plan to take a tour or attend a performance, check the latest dates and tour details.
Another option is the one-hour “Old Riga Panorama Trip” on the Riga City Canal and the Daugava. While opera and ballet combine architecture and performing arts, this boat trip takes you along two waterways. The differences can help you plan: you can decide whether you would rather spend your time on a guided tour, a performance, or a trip along the canal and the Daugava. Check the latest tour information before making plans.
The Central Market: Architectural History and Food
The distinctive pavilions of Riga Central Market were originally built as military airship hangars in the 1920s. Today, the market has five food pavilions for vegetables, dairy products, meat, fish, and dining. Their original purpose and the different food sections give the market two clearly distinct aspects: the unusual architectural history of the pavilions and what they offer today. This makes Central Market a distinctive place to explore architecture and food, complementing the historic streets and religious buildings.
When looking for a hotel in Riga, you can use these different interests as a starting point for your choice: Art Nouveau and city history, landmarks, performing arts, or the Central Market each offer a different focus. The areas of the historic centre, the monument, the cathedral, and the cultural attractions describe different sides of the city, without requiring you to limit your trip to a single theme.
